Larian Studios, the team behind Baldur's Gate 3, just held a Q&A session on Reddit to talk about the development of their upcoming game, Divinity, and clarify concerns about the use of generative AI.

In an interview with Bloomberg, CEO and Founder of Larian Studios, Swen Vincke, explained that GenAI will be used to explore ideas for Divinity, but this statement created some confusion amongst fans as it was then suggested Larian was "pushing hard" on generative AI.

Larian Studios Sets The Record Straight About AI Use In Divinity

The rumors that Larian was pushing hard on generative AI quickly spread throughout the community, but Vincke clarified what was said, "I was asked explicitly about concept art and our use of Gen AI. I answered that we use it to explore things. I didn’t say we use it to develop concept art. The artists do that. And they are indeed world-class artists."

Vincke stated Larian's use of AI is not going to take anybody's job, as their 72-person art team includes 23 concept artists, and they have plans to hire more.

In today's Q&A session held in the r/gaming subreddit, the Divinity team gave further insight into how AI will be used, stating clearly that there will not be any GenAI art in Divinity. "The important bit to note is that we will not generate “creative assets” that end up in a game without being 100% sure about the origins of the training data and the consent of those who created the data. If we use a GenAI model to create in-game assets, then it’ll be trained on data we own," said Vincke.

Larian's use of AI is not going to take anybody's job, as their 72-person art team includes 23 concept artists, and they have plans to hire more.

Another major concern within the gaming community when it comes to AI is voice acting. Embark's new extraction shooter, ARC Raiders, uses AI-generated voice lines, which many people are not happy about, but it wasn't enough to stop it from winning the best multiplayer game of 2025 award.

Larian's Machine Learning Director, Gabriel Bosque, says there will be no AI-generated voices in Divinity: "We explicitly committed in our actor agreements to not using the recordings to train or build AI voice modelers, because we are aware of how sensitive it can be to artificially generate an actor’s voice. Even if an actor were willing to agree to this if we'd compensate them, we don’t currently feel comfortable including any AI-generated voice in our games."

Bosque stated AI is only used to help reduce the mechanical legwork and tedious tasks, as there are over 100,000 voice lines scheduled to be in Divinity, recorded by hundreds of actors.

While the Divinity devs refrained from leaking many gameplay-specific details, they did leave us a breadcrumb trail of clues. Larian says Divinity's character customization will be even better than BG3, and players will be able to develop deeper relationships with their companions.
