Love It Or Hate It, At Least The Boys’ Finale Gave Us One Last Homelander Meme

After five seasons, Amazon’s superhero satire The Boys is over. The series finale was divisive, but at the very least hasn’t sparked a conspiracy theory that a secret episode is waiting in the wings to fix everything some fans didn’t like. Even if you haven’t watched the show, you probably know who Antony Starr’s Homelander is. Over the past seven years, the narcissistic supervillain and Donald Trump stand-in has been the face of dozens of memes, from his thousand-yard stare in a theater to him awkwardly taking in applause from a group of adoring fans after he literally lasers a man’s head off. The finale gave us at least one more to add to his portfolio of internet influence.

If, somehow, you don’t know what happens in The Boys’ finale, Homelander is dead. He loses all his powers after Kimiko neutralizes him, and then Butcher drives a crowbar through his skull. Just before he dies, he has a humorous moment in which he realizes his powers are gone after trying and failing to fly to safety. He jumps a couple times and flaps his arms as he tries to take flight, and when he sees he can’t, he looks at Butcher across the Oval Office with fear in his eyes. This has become the final Homelander meme, as fans have been using it to represent everything from trying to escape a bad situation in Marvel Rivals only to see your mobility move is on cooldown, to a devastating, embarrassing lack of rizz.

The Boys may be over, but it spawned a whole television franchise, with both prequel series Vought Rising and spin-off The Boys: Mexico in development at Amazon.
