Garfield and Otis, Best Buds is my new favorite Commander
Image: CBSIt’s time to get that lasagna in the oven, because Garfield is officially the next big character coming to Magic: The Gathering. Announced Friday as part of the upcoming Cats Are the Best Secret Lair Superdrop, Magic will release 15 Garfield cards across three Drops. Cards include frequent Secret Lair reprints like Sol Ring and the ubiquitous Counterspell, along with the widely beloved Swords to Plowshares.
By far the most enticing card in the bunch, however, comes as part of the Motivationally Challenged Drop. It’s a creature that hovers around $32 in value that also ranks among the top 50 most popular Commanders over the past two years. Let’s dig in deeper to see the reprint value of everything that Garfield and friends have to offer. We’ll link to each card’s Scryfall listing and put the market rate of the cheapest version next to each card so you have an easy reference.
As is always the case, each Drop is priced at $29.99 for non-foil and $39.99 for foil. A handful of Cats Are the Best cards were shown off at MagicCon: Las Vegas 2026, but the rest of the cards in the Superdrop are slated for reveal at a later date. Expect other all-inclusive bundle tiers to be announced as well. All of the above go on sale June 15 at 12 p.m. ET on the Secret Lair website.
Secret Lair x Garfield: Motivationally Challenged
- 1x Rin and Seri, Inseparable as "Garfield and Odie, Best Buds" ($26.75)
- 1x Orim's Chant as "Talk to the Paw" ($5.64)
- 1x Ponder as "Hang in There" ($1.28)
- 1x Beast Within as "I Hate Mondays" ($0.53)
- 1x Sol Ring ($1.08)
No matter which way you spin it, the Motivationally Challenged Drop is an absolute steal when bought at the non-foil level. You’re paying $29.99 and getting $35.28 worth of cards. I will 100% be picking this one up. Orim’s Chant is a one-cost disabler that prevents an opponent from casting spells, and for another mana, they can’t even attack that turn either. Ponder is a strong blue card that lets you reorder the top three cards of your library and then draw a card. Beast Within is solid three-cost removal, and Sol Ring is an essential piece of every Commander deck. By far the biggest draw here, however, is Rin and Seri, Inseparable.
Probably the most beloved “cute but dangerous” Commander in existence, it is the 45th most popular Commander over the past two years. It debuted in the Core Set 2021. Before Rin and Seri, dog and cat typal decks were common, but separate. This card fuses them together into one powerful Naya (red-white-green) engine, where playing a dog creates a cat token and playing a cat creates a dog token. But you can also pay three and tap to deal single-target damage based on the number of dogs you have, and gain life equal to the number of cats.
Secret Lair x Garfield: As Intended
- 1x Swords to Plowshares ($1.12)
- 1x Counterspell ($2.12)
- 1x Dark Ritual ($4.94)
- 1x Earthquake ($0.53)
- 1x Fog ($0.22)
For a grand total reprint value of $8.93, this particular Drop is only for the Garfield superfans out there. That said, this is a carefully curated selection of moderately powerful cards from each color. Dark Ritual is a strong card for black decks, offering a quick burst of mana for cheap. Counterspell is essential for just about every blue deck where it’s legal, and the art here where Garfield slaps his owner Jon Arbuckle right across the face is priceless. Pushing Odie off the edge of the counter is also very on-brand in Swords to Plowshares, yet another great spell with a lot of utility. Swords to Plowshares is top-tier white removal. Red and green get Earthquake and Fog, respectively. The former is a potent damage-dealing X spell. And Fog is one of the oldest “prevent all combat damage” spells in the game.
Secret Lair x Garfield: Our Only Thought Is to Entertain You
- 1x It That Betrays ($11.64)
- 1x Maddening Cacophony ($7.56)
- 1x Maddening Hex ($2.18)
- 1x Hunter's Insight ($0.38)
- 1x Molten Collapse ($0.29)
Whereas the other two drops consist of cards that look like legitimate Garfield comic panels, this drop veers in some chaotic artistic directions. At an estimated $22.05 reprint value across these five cards, the non-foil Drop is worth it in our book, considering this great art. It That Betrays transforms Garfield into a six-armed Eldrazi that will ruin your opponent’s day if their strategy involves sacrificing creatures at all. Both “Maddening” cards are designed solely to mess with opponents in the most offensive ways possible. Molten Collapse is a forgetting lasagna explosion. Whereas Hunter’s Insight is a solid green draw engine that features Garfield riding a sabre-toothed tiger. Yeah, sign us up.
