Whether we like it or not, there will always be cheaters in online games. Whether there's someone who wants to gain an edge or a company that aims to profit from it, cheaters are an inevitability in any online game.

This is something Bungie is already anticipating in its upcoming extraction shooter, Marathon.

In a new blog post by the developers, Bungie talked about their commitment to the players and Marathon as a live service game. Players can expect frequent updates and investments in network tech and security, and as part of it, Bungie issued a threat to would-be cheaters that if they cheated, that's it for their account.

Bungie noted, "We are taking a strong stance against cheating and anyone found to be cheating or developing cheats will be permanently banned from playing Marathon forever, no second chances. That said, no system is perfect so we will have an appeals system to monitor for any issues in detection."

Unless you're a cheater, this is a step in the right direction, and one I hope other game developers do as well.

If you're interested in Marathon, you'll be glad to know that a playtest is kicking off this month, and it will be open for everyone. While the initial reception to Marathon's reveal was a bit lukewarm, that hasn't stopped the game from piquing player interest, as it soared to the top of Steam's best-selling games already.

Marathon will be released on March 5 on the PS5 and PC.
