One does not simply walk into a boss fight with The Compiler in Cryo Archive. Marathon‘s end-game raid map requires multiple successful runs of collecting batteries, key cards, and hacking vaults before even attempting the final encounter. And players have to do all of this while also fighting off other human teams. It is a whole, very cool, very tense ordeal. So you can imagine how much it would suck to successfully complete it only to get killed by a random player exploiting an out-of-bounds trick to cause tragedy and chaos.
Over the weekend, a streamer who goes by NAPainter loaded into Cryo Archive, used a bug to clip into the final chamber holding The Compiler, and proceeded to wait until another team came in and finished the fight. That’s when NAPainter and his crew jumped the unsuspecting team. They thought they’d just finished what most Marathon players have never attempted, but instead of extracting with some of the best loot the game has to offer, they were gunned down and left for dead instead.
Cryo Clip of the Week goes to the most HEINOUS, EVIL, and DISGUSTING thing I have EVER done in any video game.
If you can get Out of Bounds and you can get into the Compiler loot room.
And you can just camp in the room for someone do compiler…..and then kill them. pic.twitter.com/OyQIgJWkYM

“Cryo Clip of the Week goes to the most HEINOUS, EVIL, and DISGUSTING thing I have EVER done in any video game,” NAPainter posted on May 9. “If you can get Out of Bounds and you can get into the Compiler loot room. And you can just camp in the room for someone do compiler…..and then kill them.” He later said that, in hindsight, he should have let the team self-revive. Many are already calling for him to be permanently banned.
One YouTuber already dubbed it the game’s “most controversial moment” ever and players are pointing to it as the most extreme example of the type of brutal luck that makes Cryo Archive in particular, and Marathon in general, such a tough sell to most players. While exploits like these were common in Destiny 2, they’re kryptonite for a PVP game, especially one where people can literally take your stuff when you die. Bungie understands this and is already promising a fix and potential sanctions for this sort of cheese in the future.
Over the weekend, a player posted a video of them taking advantage of a map issue and going out of bounds to gain access into the Compiler room to ambush a team after they finished completing the encounter.
First off, we will have this issue fixed before Cryo Archive becomes…

“In the past, we have not taken action against players going out of bounds, but due to this case heavily affecting other players negatively, we’ll be reviewing our policies and sharing more details soon,” Bungie wrote on May 11. “While we don’t want to punish players for bugs that they run into by accident, we will communicate more clearly the line that players should not cross when it comes to using these sorts of bugs that could be griefing others.”
In addition to patching this bug out of Cryo when it returns, Bungie also gifted the team affected extra rewards to make up for the unintended ambush. The gift package was so big, in fact, that one impacted player claimed they still weren’t able to claim it even with over 200 open slots in their inventory. In the meantime, Bungie has already teased the arrival of Marathon‘s final new activity for season 1: Ranked Cryo. That’s right, the labyrinth of death is about to get even more sweaty.
