A free update to Mario Kart World has added a major new option to the Knockout Tour mode: team racing.
Knockout Tour is a battle royale-style racing mode in which players are gradually eliminated over the course of long, map-spanning routes. The last four racers to cross each of a series of checkpoints are eliminated. Until now, it's been a free-for-all for up to 24 individual players.
The 1.5.0 patch for Nintendo's Switch 2-exclusive kart racer adds an option to play Knockout Tour in two teams of 12, three teams of eight, or four teams of six. The option is available for both online and local wireless play. If you don't have a full field of 24 players, CPU drivers will fill the remaining spots.
There are some interface tweaks to allow you to easily track how well your team is doing during the race. Eliminated players can still cheer on their team, following their teammates along in spectator mode and offering preselected comments from the sidelines.
The weighting of the scoring is changed, too, offering considerably more points for finishing in the top four. This makes surviving until the end of Knockout Tour very impactful for your team, and guarantees victory if one team clinches all the final four spots.
