Markiplier's Iron Lung movie will get a Blu-ray release

After Iron Lung's box office success, YouTuber Markiplier is setting his sights on physical media

It's a good time to be Markiplier. The YouTuber is basking in the success of his self-funded horror movie Iron Lung — which opened to nearly $18 million at the box office on a budget of less than $3 million — and he's already looking for the next mountain to climb. After showing that his fans are willing to line up at movie theaters at a time when streaming is more prevalent than ever, he's next setting his sights on physical media.

Iron Lung is based on a 2022 video game from indie developer David Szymanski. In it, a convict is trapped in a welded-shut submarine and forced to explore an ocean of blood on a moon to look for resources after most of the universe disappears. The filmed version is written and directed by Markiplier, whose real name is Mark Fischbach. He also stars in Iron Lung as the protagonist Simon.

In a video uploaded to his YouTube channel, Markiplier noted that Iron Lung will be in theaters for another week before attention shifts to the home release. And while Iron Lung will be coming to digital platforms, it's also getting a physical release.

"We're still getting the wheels turning for you to get it at home," he said in the video. "The whole translation thing, it's going to take some doing. I have some plans in the way, but as far as getting it ready and packaged up for a home release with DVD and Blu-ray and stuff like that."

Given the physical media market has certainly dwindled as more audiences seek out digital-first entertainment, it's commendable that Markiplier is putting thought into a DVD and Blu-ray release of the film. He's also dedicated to remaining independent throughout the process, rather than partnering with a larger company.

"There's a lot of systems that [I've] got to learn, and I have some guidance that's going to help me through that," he explained. "But we're still doing it independently from start to finish. This project will be independent the whole way through, and I think that's pretty cool."

As for when to expect the home release, Markiplier hasn't revealed that just yet. It takes time to get physical media printed, so chances are it'll be a while before you'll be able to purchase your own Iron Lung Blu-ray.
