Marvel Comics is going all in on the fighting game in August

Ms. Marvel, Dr. Doom, Spider-Man, Ghost Rider and more battle in Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls

Coinciding with the release of Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, Marvel is dedicating its comic lineup for the month of August to the hotly anticipated tag-team fighter. The game, from renowned fighting game developer Arc System Works, will be released on Aug. 6.

Marvel announced on its official blog that there will be two major celebrations of the game in comic form. The first is a tie-in, titled Marvel Tōkon: First Strike #1, a one-shot comic. Marvel teases that the tie-in will "expand the game's mythology and reveal the exciting backstories of its playable heroes as well as its antagonists, the Promoter and Champion." A sneak peek at the issue shows a stylish cover with some of the game's cast as well as three pages of interior art. The pages show the Champion in a ruined city, the Avengers fighting a threat in New York, and Storm taking down a Sentinel.

Steve Orlando, Josh Trujillo, and Tom Waltz handle the writing while Bruno Büll, Áthila Fabbio, and Ryusei Yamada handle art. The pages make it clear that each section is handled by a different writer-artist team, so it seems like the book will follow only the three stories seen in the preview pages.

In addition to the tie-in, Marvel also announced that a number of its current series are receiving variant covers themed around Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls starting in August. The first 11 were shown off and predominantly feature the game's designs for iconic Marvel characters. The standout is Ryan Stegman's variant for the tie-in comic itself, which, rather than a character model, has energetic art of Wolverine slashing his way toward an unseen enemy.
