There's more to come for this Sith master and apprentice combo

Star Wars fans have spent 10 episodes of Star Wars - Maul Shadow Lord watching the ex-Sith Lord Darth Maul (Sam Witwer) try to rebuild his criminal empire, as well as snag Devon Izara (Gideon Adlon) as his new apprentice. Viewers will know that, after the shocking two-part finale, which was as bloody and brutal as we've ever seen in Star Wars animation, the relationship between Maul and Devon changed forever. Now, thanks to an interview with Adlon, we know more about what that connection between the ex-Sith and Jedi Padawan will look like.
Maul and Devon's relationship has drastically changed throughout the first season, from Devon's justified suspicion of Maul's intentions to her gradual recognition of her own anger and pride in the Zabrak warrior.

While Devon was certainly tempted to give in to Maul's way of thinking, Daki acted as a calming and positive influence, a symbol even, that pulled Devon away from her anger and reminded her of the ways of the old Jedi Republic and their teachings.
Unfortunately, once Daki is slain by Darth Vader, that positive influence is gone for good, and makes Devon joining with Maul inevitable.
“I think that anybody who goes through loss like that, the path they walk on after that brings out new colors," Adlon explains in a Star Wars blog interview.

From Luke Skywalker and his relationship with Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru to Leia Organa's family of Bail and Breha Organa, familial relationships — regardless of whether characters share blood or not — have always been a key theme within Star Wars. According to Adlon, Maul and Devon's connection will also go down that route, but fans shouldn't expect much love or affection.
“Devon related to Maul in a way that she wasn’t able to relate to Daki or people in the Jedi Order. Even though they never say it, she does find a father figure in Maul,” Adlon says. “It’s not love. It’s something I’m trying to figure out with her. And I will.”
All episodes of Star Wars: Maul — Shadow Lord are available now on Disney Plus.
