Once every few years, there’s a new addition to Minecraft that players figure out how to exploit the hell out of, and the wacky strategies they come up with end up reinventing a core aspect of the game forever. But one of the game’s latest features has somehow managed to revolutionize pretty much every aspect of the game despite being a decoration, and players are having an absolute field day with it.
On Tuesday, Mojang introduced cushions to Minecraft via a new snapshot. Cushions were initially made out to be a big deal for one reason and one reason only: they allow players to sit for the first time in the game’s history. But once players figured out what else they could do with these cushions, they glossed over that sitting part pretty quickly.
First, a little bit of context for why all of this is possible. Cushions behave differently because they’re classified as entities rather than blocks, which lets them escape the confines of Minecraft’s grid (in this case, they can be placed at a wide variety of heights). This has already led to some neat roof designs, very gradual staircases, and furniture that looks like it’s been ripped straight out of a mod:

yeah sure cushions are awesome for detailing but minecraft furniture stocks just went up by 500% pic.twitter.com/ntaNrmpo6g

Building with cushions is neat, but these unassuming blocks are also weirdly useful for travel. Because players can sit on them with no cooldown, and because they can click on cushions from several blocks away to sit down (similarly to in-game beds), cushions essentially let players teleport. By lining a bunch of cushions up, players can even do this:

It also works vertically:
cushions can be placed on a button over empty space, and since they can be interacted with from below you can make an absurdly fast elevator by placing a cushion every 6 blocks vertically. the only caveat is you have to have one more at the top for dismounting https://t.co/YjfMwruCnm pic.twitter.com/lelmyNj5W0

It’s worth noting that cushions were introduced in a snapshot, or an experimental release, so these methods of travel might not last long if Mojang decides that cushions are a little too powerful. What will hopefully last, though, is the fact that players can finally decorate their ice boat roads, which are fast travel methods that usually look pretty unfortunate due to being made solely out of ice:
with the new cushion we can finally make rainbow road ice boat tracks! the cushions are entities without collision so they dont slow the boats down on ice like everything else pic.twitter.com/KLkzV9MtQu

Cushions can also be used for some pretty cool redstone engineering stuff (just please don’t ask me how this works):

My favorite part of all of this, however, is how cushions have just inspired some good old creativity. It feels like it’s 2012 and people are figuring out how to make chairs using stairs again! There are these masterpieces:

Aaaaaand this, I guess:
