Minecraft Movie 2 Reveals Full Title And Confirms Kirsten Dunst As Alex With Matt Berry Back As Someone New

Minecraft Movie 2 will be called Minecraft Movie Squared (I chuckled). The name was unveiled at Microsoft’s Minecraft Live event during TwitchCon 2026, alongside confirmation of the sequel’s July 2027 release date. We also got a first look at some of the new cast members accompanying Jack Black on his latest block-smashing adventure.

The reveal hinted that this time around, the crew will encounter new locations and mobs, as well as being joined by some additional characters. Alongside Jack Black, Jason Momoa, and the rest, Matt Berry, who previously played Nitwit, will return as a new undisclosed character. Most significantly of all, Kirsten Dunst will be playing Alex.

Initial reactions are what you’d expect. “Sqaured is such a peak name,” reads one top comment on Instagram. “This horrible movie didn’t need a sequel,” reads another.

Minecraft Movie Squared will arrive in theaters on July 23, 2027. Jared Hess returns to direct a script co-written by him and Chris Galletta. Danielle Brooks and Jennifer Coolidge will also reprise their roles. There is even a The Minecraft Movie Build Challenge  that fans can enter for a chance to have their own personal builds appear in the movie or end credits. Creations can be submitted via TikTok, Twitch, or Minecraft itself.

While the original Minecraft Movie did little to inspire confidence with its initial VFX-heavy trailer, and the full release was widely panned by critics, it turned out to be a box office juggernaut. It brought in over $1 billion and my kids have watched it dozens of times. Based on that it’s easy to see why Warner Bros. and Mojang are confidently rushing out a sequel. We’ll see if they can make a better movie in the process this time around.

The Minecraft Netflix series, however, is still MIA. Announced back in 2024, the animated show was set to tell original stories about new characters. There was no update on its status at this year’s Minecraft Live.
