Shane Limbaugh (He/Him) is a Contributor from the US. While he hasn't been writing about games for very long he has certainly been playing them. His degree in Game Design and Criticism let him better understand the fundamentals of the industry and the games themselves. There aren't many games he hasn't at least put hands on thanks to his time working at GameStop.

MIO: Memories in Orbit isn't an incredibly long game that you'll find yourself spending hundreds of hours in. It's pretty short and sweet, especially if you're just going for rolling credits.

The final boss in that case will be Ati, Keeper of the Heart. She's the sister of our player character, and you've likely run into her all around the Vessel as you complete the different tasks assigned to you.

This fight is definitely up there in difficulty, but it's not quite as tough as some of the other fights you'll encounter. This guide will run you through preparing to fight Ati, as well as a breakdown of her attacks with some tips and tricks to help you out.

Preparing for the Ati Fight

Mio Ati Fight Modifier Loadout

Ati is the very last boss you'll face off against while doing the regular story run, and you won't have to fight her at all if you go for the alternate ending. Despite that, there are still a few more things you'll need to knock out before you go into battle.

If you've not gotten to Ati yet, you'll need to acquire all four of the other Voices from the various parts of the Vessel. You can give Ati a go once you've gathered the last one you need from the Hand and head back to Shii to update them.

Once you speak to Shii, you'll be moved up to the husk of the Spine, and then you can talk to Ati. Before you end up getting threatened with violence, you should double-check your modifier loadout to make sure you have the setup you want.

Modifiers:

  • Enhanced Dodge
  • Analyzer
  • Protective Overlay
  • Self-Awareness
  • Foolish Ideal
  • Kinetic Thrust

Depending on how much exploring you've done or how many helpful modifiers you've found, these may not be your best option. As always, simply use these as a suggestion rather than a definitive way to play, and always use what you like the best.

You can always turn on your assists if you're having a tough time or just want things to be a bit easier on you.

How to Beat Ati, Keeper of the Heart

Mio Ati Fight Defeated

Ati can be pretty difficult just because she is small and fast, just like you. It's always odd to end up fighting a mirror version of yourself, but luckily, Ati doesn't have all the same power-ups you do.

This will be a rather long fight, almost a full five minutes, since Ati pops in and out of existence and doesn't give you much time to do any damage. She also has a few pretty hard-hitting attacks that will make things much more complicated if they hit you.

She only has two phases and uses the same moves for the most part, but with some modifications in the second phase. Once you know all her tricks, she's not all that tough, and you can use the video above to get a better idea of what to expect.

Ati Phase One

Mio Ati Fight Phase One

This phase will mostly see Ati bouncing around or moving from one side of the arena to the other. With her smaller size, you'll have a very limited window to strike. This means, when dodging or avoiding attacks, you want to try to stay close enough to close the distance with Hairpin.

Attack

Description

Dodge or Avoid

Fireball

Tendril Stab

Triple Strike Sky Version

Triple Strike Ground Version

Semicircle Fireballs

Dash Strike

Hairpin Grab

Ati stands on one side of the arena and fires a single horizontal fireball. She then teleports to the other side and does it again in the opposite direction.

Avoid.

Ati will pull their tendrils in to her for a slight build-up before shooting them out in the surrounding area.

Dodge.

Ati will pull back one side of the tendrils and then launch forward with two attacks. If you're far enough away, she'll jump into the air and disappear before reappearing above you and striking straight down.

Avoid the ground strike and dodge the air strike.

Ati will do the same two attacks as the sky version, but instead of jumping, will launch a third ground attack in your direction.

Dodge.

Ati will leap into the air in the center of the arena and disappear. Five purple dots will appear and slowly turn into fireballs that target you, moving from one side to the other.

Avoid by using Striders to climb the wall.

Ati plants two tendrils into the ground and pulls back before slingshotting herself forward across the ground.

Avoid.

Ati will appear in the central part of the arena and whip her hair around before sending it after you, pulling you in, and delivering a painful strike.

Dodge right as she releases the hair.

Ati Phase Two

Mio Ati Fight Phase Two

If you make it through phase one, things will really heat up as Ati adds in more attacks and changes up some of the ones she used before. You'll need to react quickly if you want to avoid getting turned into robotic sashimi.

Hairpin Grab

Ati will strike the ground, building up electricity on the ground for a moment. After it's electrified, she'll vanish and reappear on one side before dashing between the sides of the arena three times.

Avoid by staying in the air or on the sides.

Ati will appear in the air for a moment before dashing diagonally towards the ground and sweeping across an area in front of her.

Avoid by staying far enough away or jumping.

Ati will appear below one of the crystals in the arena and dash upward before sending out three fireballs towards you.

Dodge.

Ati appears above you and begins raining down three fireballs individually before shooting three at once downward.

Avoid.

Ati will leap into the air in the center of the arena and disappear. Five purple dots will appear and slowly turn into fireballs that target you, starting from a random dot and firing randomly.

Avoid by using Striders to climb the wall.

Ati plants two tendrils into the ground and pulls back before slingshotting herself forward across the ground. Ati disappears before striking down from the sky between one and three times.

Avoid the dash, then dodge the downward strike.

Ati will appear in the central part of the arena and whip her hair around before sending it after you, pulling you in, and delivering a painful strike.

Dodge right as she releases the hair.

When you manage to drop Ati's health to zero, she'll spawn in the middle and begin creating a massive Spirit Bomb-esque attack that will fizzle out. You'll both end up getting stunned, and when you recover, you'll just need to deliver the killing blow. You can't wait it out or take mercy on Ati, sadly.

Once you finish off Ati, you'll get one of the endings, and that's all she wrote for this Metroidvania. You can always pick up right before the fight without any worries, so if you're hunting for anything specifically, you can continue on as you please.
