Magic: The Gathering is once again returning to the Wasteland with yet another crossover with the Fallout franchise, this time spotlighting Amazon's ongoing TV series as part of a 22-card Secret Lair Superdrop slated to release on Jan. 26. Official Fallout accounts first teased the collaboration in the middle of the day on Jan. 15 before the full reveal hours later.
"With cards brighter than a vintage marquee and tough enough for the wasteland, Secret Lair's Rad Superdrop brings Fallout's retro-future characters straight to your Magic collection," the official page reads. The "Rad Superdrop" includes unique cards for Lucy, the Ghoul, and Maximus from the Amazon series, none of which are all that game-breaking by any means (which is sometimes the complaint with unique cards showing up in Secret Lair). There are also a number of reprints from the March 2024 Fallout Commander decks, so anyone who invested heavily in any of those decks might want to consider picking up some of these new cards.
Image: Wizards of the CoastIncluded with every order $149 or more is a Silver Shroud Costume promo. It's a piece of equipment with flash that automatically attaches to a creature you control and gives them shroud, meaning that it cannot be targeted by any spell or ability. And that creature can't be blocked. The flavor here is perfect for everyone's favorite Boston-based vigilante.
Here's a closer look at the cards:
Beyond Vault 33
- Lucy MacLean, Positively Armed
- The Ghoul, Gunslinger
- Maximus, Knight Apparent
- Pre-War Formalwear
- Spirit Mantle
- T-45 Power Armor as "T-60 Power Armor"
For fans of energy counters artifact decks, Maximus might look pretty eye-catching. He's a mono red 4/4 with trample that costs four mana, and he searches your library for an equipment card with a mana value of two, meaning he's tailored to interact with the power armor included in this Drop. Lucy and The Ghoul feel designed like they'd fit right into pre-existing Fallout decks. Lucy can copy any token an opponent creates, but if you put her in the Scrappy Survivors deck that focuses on generating junk tokens, she can function as a draw engine for you. The Ghoul, meanwhile, doles out rad counters whenever a zombie or mutant dies, which presents an interesting new option for the Mutant Menace deck.
Greet the Dog
- Yoshimaru, Ever Faithful as "Dogmeat, Constant Companion"
- Arcane Signet
- Lightning Greaves
- Patchwork Banner
- Sol Ring
Arcane Signet and Sol Ring are must-have staples in Commander for generating mana, so you probably already have some versions of those. Patchwork Banner is hugely useful in any kind of deck that focuses on a single creature type (looking at you Lorwyn Eclipsed decks). Interestingly enough, this Drop doesn't just reprint Dogmeat, Ever Loyal from the Scrappy Survivors deck. Instead, we get a reprint of Yoshimaru from Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty, a really solid co-Commander with Partner (which lets you have two Commanders if they both have Partner) that picks up a +1/+1 counter every time you play a legendary permanent. So this version of Dogmeat works great in a Commander deck full of legendary spells of all kinds, not just creatures.
Rad
- Ripples of Potential
- Mutational Advantage
- The Wise Mothman
- Mindcrank
- Mesmeric Orb as "Mothman Egg"
The Wise Mothman returns! EDHREC lists Mothman as the 13th most popular Commander over the last two years, thanks in no small part to him headlining the Mutant Menace preconstructed deck. Together, all of these cards work rather well together, stacking counters with proliferate from Ripples of Potential, and then Mutational Advantage gives permanents you control with counters hexproof and indestructible until end of turn. Mindcrank and Mothman Egg also feed into The Wise Mothman's bottom ability, which puts a +1/+1 counter on each of up to X creatures where X is the number of nonland cards milled. Mothman also doles out rad counters to each player when he enters, so proliferate works on those as well. If you already have Mutant Menace and play it on occasion, this Drop's basically a must-buy.
Welcome to New Vegas
- Tinybones, Trinket Thief as "Benny, Platinum Thief"
- Isshin, Two Heavens as One as "Joshua Graham, Burned Man"
- The Deck of Many Things as "Custom Caravan Deck"
- Caged Sun as "The Platinum Chip"
- Nuka-Cola Vending Machine as "Sunset Sarsaparilla Machine"
In terms of overall value, looking at the average price of the original printings of these cards, this Drop is the best bang for your buck. Tinybones sells for around $20 and Nuka-Cola Vending Machine runs for closer to $30. If you already have the Science! Fallout deck, then you've already got a copy of the latter. Tinybones works incredibly well in decks that force your opponents to discard cards. And, if an opponent has no cards, you can pay six to take away 10 life, which could be a game-winner in the right circumstances. Isshin is also the 18th most-popular Commander over the last two years, according to EDHREC.
