This year's Call of Duty will be the first entry in the shooter franchise to arrive on a Nintendo platform in nearly 13 years. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, out in October, will be released on Nintendo Switch 2, alongside versions for PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.

Activision officially announced Modern Warfare 4 on Thursday, reconfirming that this year's Call of Duty game won't be released on last-generation consoles (PlayStation 4 and Xbox One). But it will be the first on a Switch platform, paying off a commitment from 2022 to bring Call of Duty to Nintendo consoles.

In December 2022, then-Xbox head Phil Spencer announced that Microsoft had "entered into a 10-year commitment to bring Call of Duty to Nintendo following the merger of Microsoft and Activision Blizzard King.  Microsoft is committed to helping bring more games to more people – however they choose to play."

At the time, Microsoft also promised to continue to offer Call of Duty games on Steam, simultaneously with their Xbox releases, in the wake of that merger. Those commitments were announced in an attempt to placate regulators in the U.S., U.K., and E.U. as the $68.7 billion merger between Microsoft and Activision Blizzard was being scrutinized.

There hasn’t been a Call of Duty game on a Nintendo platform since 2013’s Call of Duty: Ghosts for Wii U, and there’s never been one on Nintendo Switch. That will change in 2026 when Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is released for PS5, Switch 2, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X on Oct. 23.
