The year is 1942, and one of the most decisive naval battles in modern history is taking place around the Midway Atoll in the Pacific Ocean.

That is the scene naval and air strategy game Task Force Admiral wants to deliver upon its impending early access release.

In a holiday announcement, the developers over at Drydock Dreams Games revealed that Task Force Admiral would release in "the end of January, possibly early February if things don't go 100% according to plan."

According to the studio, this would be an early access release, but players can expect the battle of Midway at least to be "absolutely playable, possibly with half a dozen or so scenarios and variants" to shake things up.

It has been just over five years since Task Force Admiral's Steam page went live, and the early access release marks the end of an era for one of the most ambitious strategy games in development today.

The next opportunity to get a taste of the game will come next week, when the demo will become available once more with an extra scenario to toy around with.

Although controls and flight dynamics naturally won't have the same depth as a dedicated flight simulator, this mechanic adds a whole new layer to the gameplay of Task Force Admiral, allowing players more inclined to micromanage to try and get the best out of their air assets.

For the thinking Admiral, next week's demo will also have Tacview support. This is a debrief tool commonly used in combat flight simulators and modern strategy games that gives you a full view of how the engagement played out, making it one of the most powerful learning aids for serious players.

No "Hardcore Wargame" Pricing

With the release of Task Force Admiral less than two months away, the issue of pricing becomes ever more pressing. The developers

have stopped short of giving actual numbers, but you can make an educated guess based on the information provided.

Task Force Admiral is going to be priced more or less in line with Sea Power, a Cold War naval strategy game also being published by MicroProse. At the time of writing, Sea Power has a listing price of $49.99, though you can get it for $39.99 until January 5th.

Exact pricing for Task Force Admiral will be announced closer to release, but the devs hope the demo will allow prospective players to make an educated guess about the state of the game to avoid any misunderstandings.

Task Force Admiral will be available for PC via Steam in late January or early February 2026.
