Netflix's new Ghostbusters animated series gets release date and first look

We have the tools, we have the talent, and we have a new Ghostbusters cartoon

It's Ghostbusters Day, and Netflix finally gave the public its first look at the upcoming Ghostbusters animated series to celebrate. It's officially titled Ghostbusters: Night Shift, and will come to the streaming service next year.

Ghostbusters: Night Shift comes from Sony Pictures Animation (KPop Demon Hunters, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) and will debut exclusively on Netflix in 2027. The new animated series "marks the next chapter in the franchise’s ghoul-catching legacy, bringing supernatural comedy and paranormal action back to animation," Netflix said in an announcement.

Details on the series are scant, but Ghostbusters: Night Shift will be executive produced by Ben Hibon, Elliott Kalan, Jason Reitman, Gil Kenan, Amie Karp, and Dan Aykroyd. Reitman and Kenan co-wrote Sony's most recent live-action entries in the 42-year-old Ghostbusters franchise, Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.

Netflix released a piece of key art for its new show, a stylized version of the classic Ghostbusters logo, hinting that the feel-good ghost-bustin' may include contending with more than just spirits from the immaterial world.

Ghostbusters is a long-running supernatural comedy film franchise, and has flirted with animation before. The Real Ghostbusters is the best remembered show, as it ran for seven seasons and felt like a continuation of the movies, with many returning characters and ghosts. In 1997, a different animated series called Extreme Ghostbusters aired, but it mostly followed new characters and had an edgier look and tone fitting for a show from the '90s.

Netflix's Ghostbusters animated series is the first new one since Extreme Ghostbusters. It has been in the works for several years, and Dan Aykroyd is involved with the project as an executive producer. Details were otherwise scarce until Netflix's reveal today, with the last high-profile Ghostbusters project being 2024's Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, which was met with mixed reception.
