As expected, season 2 of the One Piece live-action series will be visually bold

One of the biggest doubts One Piece fans had after the announcement of Netflix's live-action adaptation of Eichiiro Oda's global hit series concerned the visual effects. One Piece, like many other shonen manga, is a spectacle of bizarre powers, fantastical creatures, and unique locations, which are all hard to translate into a live-action series. While the first season of Netflix's One Piece did a decent job with its visual effects, the larger scope of second season One Piece: Into the Grand Line made those initial worries seem even more relevant.
Based on the new trailer for season 2, it seems like fans have no cause for concern. Whether it's a matter of creating a giant cake made of wax, wielding three flaming swords, or making limbs sprout from people, One Piece: Into the Grand Line seems to have nailed its special-effects duties. This season isn't even afraid of showing an otter riding on the back of a vulture equipped with machine guns, a duo that fans of the franchise will recognize as the cute-but-lethal Mr. 13 and Miss Friday. While a trailer isn't necessarily representative of the whole product, the effects seem smooth and fluid — as one would expect from a rumored budget bigger than season 1's impressive $18 million per episode.
In One Piece: Into the Grand Line, Luffy and his Straw Hat pirates will have their first brush against Baroque Works, an organization of assassins who are weaving a dastardly plot in the Grand Line, the most dangerous sea in the world (kind of, as manga and anime fans know). This season will focus mostly on the Little Garden and Drum Kingdom arcs, in which the Straw Hats meet giants and then recruit their next member, the goofy reindeer doctor Tony Tony Chopper. Still, Baroque Works will be present as an overarching villain, even if the final confrontation with the group and its boss will happen in the following season, which is already in production.

New faces join the cast to interpret the dangerous Baroque Work assassins: Charithra Chandran will play Miss Wednesday; Lera Abova will play Miss All-Sunday; David Dastmalchian will play Mr. 3; Camrus Johnson will play Mr. 5; Jazzara Jaslyn will play Miss Valentine; Daniel Lasker will play Mr. 9; and Sophia Anne Caruso will play Miss Goldenweek.
One Piece: Into the Grand Line premieres on Netflix on March 10.
