New Avengers: Doomsday Trailer Includes First Look At RDJ As Doom, But…

CinemaCon, or as I’m starting to call it “the place the film industry gathers to make the rest of us feel FOMO for a few days,” wrapped up on April 16 in Las Vegas, and Marvel Studios was one of the last companies to present yesterday evening. The showcase included new footage of Avengers: Doomsday, and I’d love to show you the footage, but from the sound of it, anyone caught trying to record the Doomsday trailer was promptly escorted out by security.

We do have some firsthand accounts of what happened in the trailer, though.

Description of the ‘AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY’ trailer shown at CinemaCon:

We hear the words "Something's coming. Something we may not be able to deter" over the ruins of the X-Mansion.

We see Doctor Doom kneeling and his face looks scarred.

Thor remarks that he's fought many enemies… pic.twitter.com/uL2RvzXgNc

It sounds like a lot of the trailer focused on characters that were spotlighted in the teaser trailers that played in theaters before Avatar: Fire and Ash last year, including Thor, Steve Rogers, and the X-Men. Robert Downey Jr. appears as villain Doctor Doom and is apparently using an accent, so he doesn’t sound like Tony Stark, who he played in the MCU for over a decade between Iron Man and Avengers: Endgame. Fans have speculated that Doom might be a multiverse variant of Tony, but that doesn’t seem to be the case, at least not based on what folks saw and heard in the trailer. So why cast Downey Jr. in the first place? Probably nostalgia baiting, but we’ve beaten that dead horse more times than the MCU has brought back retired characters.

Also announced at the panel was “Infinity Vision,” which is Disney and Marvel’s new theater screen certification for what it calls “a new benchmark for theatrical presentation.” Some fans interpreted this as Disney’s effort to create a kind of IMAX competitor, possibly in an effort to secure big screens in December when Doomsday comes out because Dune: Part Three is launching the same week and eating up IMAX screens.

Disney just built an IMAX competitor without installing a single piece of equipment.

Here's what actually happened at CinemaCon. Disney didn't buy a projection company. Didn't sign an exclusivity deal. Didn't announce new construction. They slapped a certification brand on 75… https://t.co/Ijb13ol3Lx

Infinity Vision screens will be showing a re-release of Avengers: Endgame on September 25 that will apparently include new footage, presumably tying it more closely to the events of Doomsday. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said that Doomsday will pick up immediately after Endgame, which I assume means it will have some sort of connective tissue linking it to the final scene of that movie, in which Steve Rogers is dancing with Peggy Carter in the past.

Avengers: Doomsday is coming to theaters on December 18, but before that, Spider-Man: Brand New Day will premiere on July 31, though the webslinger is not confirmed to be in Avengers: Doomsday yet.
