Guerrilla Games and Sony Interactive Entertainment revealed the next chapter in their Horizon franchise on Thursday. Horizon Hunters Gathering is a co-op action game coming to PlayStation 5 and Windows PC.

Horizon Hunters Gathering features teams of up to three players fighting the machine dinosaurs the Horizon series is known for. "Combat is tactical, reactive, and deeply skill-based, building on the tactical precision of the Horizon games while embracing the dynamics of team play," reads the PlayStation Blog announcement post. Two game modes were revealed, the first being a wave-based mode and the other a "multi-stage trial" with varying challenges and rewards.

It sounds like Horizon Hunters Gathering will be a hodgepodge of various gameplay elements and genres. You'll play as unique Hunters that sound pulled straight out of a hero shooter, and you'll kit them out with a "rogue-lite perk system" for their builds.

Being a co-op title is a departure for the franchise, though in the nearly 10-minute (wowza!) announcement trailer, studio director Jan-Bart Van Beek stresses single-player games will still be a core part of Guerrilla going forward. The art style is also a bit of a departure, making it look closer to a cross between a generic hero shooter and Fortnite than the post-apocalyptic realism present in the first two mainline games.

Despite the divergence in style and tone, Horizon Hunters Gathering is fully canon in the Horizon series. Narrative details are being held back for now, but the team promises the game's story won't "stop at launch," making it sound like Horizon Hunters Gathering will be the next live-service title vying for your attention. It'll support cross-play and cross-progression, meaning your squad can be spread out across PS5 and PC.

No release window was given, but there will be an upcoming playtest at the end of February on PS5 and PC for players to get their first taste of the in-development game and to offer feedback. You can sign up at the PlayStation Beta Program.
