After leaking all over social media, the latest trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day is finally out on official channels and in HD without watermarks and giant Xs over it. Despite Spider-Man: No Way Home ending with the suggestion that Tom Holland’s Peter Parker might be returning to the kind of ground-level crimefighting he never really got to do in the MCU, Brand New Day seems pretty crowded with big, superhero-size personalities.
Peter’s got a lot going on in Brand New Day: he’s still dealing with the fact that nobody remembers him after the multiverse shenanigans of No Way Home; he’s trying to fight crime like the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man he wants to be; and he’s also being overcome by some force he doesn’t understand. There’s no sign of the symbiote here, so it remains to be seen if this will be an adaptation of the Man-Spider character (Spider-Man after undergoing a monstrous mutation), as fans suspect. But what we do know is that the Hulk is back. Mark Ruffalo returns as Bruce Banner in Brand New Day, and it looks like he will be hulking out at some point in the film.
Also making his big-screen debut is Jon Bernthal’s Punisher, who is entering a begrudging partnership with Spider-Man as things unravel. The real mystery here is still Sadie Sink’s role. The Stranger Things actor is playing an undisclosed role in the film, and we see a character who fans speculate is the one played by Sink, obscured by a hood. The rumor is that she may be playing Jean Grey which, if true, would mark the MCU debut of the telekinetic mutant when the movie premieres on July 31, but Marvel itself is keeping that particular card close to its chest for now. Several actors from Fox’s X-Men movies are confirmed to appear in Avengers: Doomsday in December, but it’s currently unknown whether Jean Grey actor Famke Janssen will be among them. There’s also still no word on whether Holland will appear in that film as Spidey, but we might have a better sense of that after Brand New Day comes out.
Sidenote: If you’re still playing Insomniac’s Spider-Man 2, you can look forward to a free update on July 28 which adds Peter’s suit from Brand New Day to his wardrobe. Hoorah.
