Covering the video games industry since 2017, with experience in news, articles, lists, and reviews (and I blame The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask for that).

If you are a fan of RPGs and want a third-person version: Tayná Garcia is a Brazilian journalist (but you can call her Tay) who ended up working with video games after finishing Zelda: Majora's Mask when she was a kid. With more than eight years of experience in the segment, she has been an assistant editor at Jovem Nerd in the past and is currently a contributor at DualShockers and a writer for gaming magazines for Editora Europa. Oh, and she may like Hideo Kojima a bit too much.

I’m the first to admit that the Nintendo 64’s library isn't massive, nor was it the top seller of its generation. For the sake of comparison, the entire N64 library could easily fit onto a single Nintendo Switch game card today, which is pretty mind-blowing.

However, no one can deny that it is one of Nintendo’s consoles with the most truly groundbreaking titles, with games that became benchmarks for different genres, alongside many hidden and underrated gems – and inside that last group, there are several JRPGs that have slipped through the cracks of history, largely because they remain trapped on their original hardware.

I’m lucky enough to still have my childhood Nintendo 64 and a growing collection of cartridges, but I often find myself thinking about certain games that never received the recognition they deserved and are slowly being forgotten.

That is why today we are looking back at some of the JRPGs in this exact situation. I know the Nintendo 64 wasn't exactly a powerhouse for the genre (which flourished much more on the PlayStation 1), but we did have some remarkable gems that deserve to be remembered and rescued! So, shall we take a look at them?

This list is not ranked, since they all deserve some attention and love!

JRPG, Strategy, Turn-Based

If I were to use technical terms, I’d tell you that Super Robot Wars 64 is a tactical JRPG with turn-based mechanics. However, I’d much rather describe it as one of the greatest crossovers of mecha units from various anime series that any manga fan could ever dream of playing!

It essentially marked the return of the Super Robot Wars franchise to Nintendo consoles at the time, while also introducing a relatively complex system featuring four different protagonists, each with their own background and mech, which results in different branching storylines.

I still believe this is one of the best SRW titles I have ever played, largely due to its narrative depth. Its story features huge branching paths filled with twists, like allying with a group that later becomes your bitter rival, for instance, which was something most games in the genre weren't doing at the time.

Unfortunately for most players, the game remains trapped on the Nintendo 64, and to make matters more difficult, it was released only in Japanese, making it the perfect candidate for a modern re-release that could finally introduce its brilliance to the West.

5 Aidyn Chronicles: The First Mage

An Underrated Adventure

Aidyn Chronicles: The First Mage

If you love JRPGs that aren’t afraid to dive headfirst into wild fantasy elements, complete with weird goblins, all sorts of monsters, and enormous dragons, then Aidyn Chronicles: The First Mage is definitely for you.

It is truly massive in terms of content, featuring towns bustling with people and gigantic castles to explore. You also have no fewer than 12 different characters to play with, ranging from squires and knights to wizards, thieves, and barbarians (my favorite). And the gameplay constantly alternates between two modes: one focused on exploration and traveling from place to place to interact with NPCs, and another dedicated entirely to tactical, turn-based combat.

The Nintendo 64's JRPG catalog might be small, but it packs a lot of heart.

Also, there is quite an interesting feature that most players find frustrating, but I personally think it's a cool detail that makes this JRPG even denser: once a character dies, they never come back. You’ve truly lost them – and the only way to get them back is to reset the game and load your last save, adding a layer of weight to every decision you make.

But guess what? This complex, ambitious adventure is sadly underrated nowadays, mainly because it remains trapped on the Nintendo 64, never having graced another console.

4 Quest 64

A Minimalist Journey in a 3D World

N64 JRPGs Still Trapped on Original Hardware Quest 64

I have always found it curious how JRPGs in the late '90s were constantly chasing absolute innovation in their narratives and settings – I mean, think of Final Fantasy VII on the PlayStation 1. However, Quest 64 chose to walk in the opposite direction.

And quite intentionally! It basically aimed for a straightforward plot and a simple system, essentially being a JRPG that felt like it belonged on the NES, but with 3D graphics. So that’s exactly where the charm of this game lies: it offers a basic yet solid formula that remains true to the fundamental building blocks of what makes the genre great.

To me, it still carries a heavy influence from the early Final Fantasy titles, which were much simpler before the jump to three-dimensional cutscenes. This makes Quest 64 feel a bit cliché, but in a way that was, above all, nostalgic during a period of relentless innovation.

All things considered, it is definitely an interesting chapter to revisit (or discover for the first time) for any fan of the genre. However, if you don't own an original Nintendo 64, I have some bad news for you.

3 Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber

Re-Trapped by Time

Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber

Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber is the kind of JRPG that draws you in from the very first moment, though the specific reason tends to vary for every player.

For me, it was the dialogue, which is packed with personality. However, I have heard other fans rave more about the beautifully drawn art, the orchestral depth of the soundtrack, the wonderful character arcs, or the tactical morale systems that encourage you to weigh your interactions with the various NPCs on your journey.

That old folding console is clamped down tight on these JRPGs.

These qualities were highly praised at the time, though mostly by critics and niche players, never quite shining as brightly as other N64 heavyweights. However, the game saw a resurgence when it became available as a retro download on the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS eShops, finally capturing a much larger community of fans.

The sad part of this story is that the modern availability of Ogre Battle 64 effectively ended when those digital stores were shuttered in March 2023. And this forced this Nintendo 64 classic right back into its original cartridge, once again trapped on aging hardware. But, boy, how I wish for a bit more care for this one – and even a PC port or a remaster!

JRPG, Roguelike

This is a very specific JRPG with a lot of layers, so let me break it down: essentially, Shiren the Wanderer is a spin-off of the Mystery Dungeon series, which, interestingly enough, was one of the true pioneers of the Roguelike genre.

Just like other entries in this franchise, your goal is to build a castle entirely on your own while doing everything in your power to defend a local village from Oni (Japanese demon) attacks. What makes Shiren's Castle and the Oni Invasion unique is its sense of humor, with plenty of quirky characters cropping up to help you throughout the game!

Also, there is a fantastic optional task introduced after you beat the main story: the monster zoo. Basically, you use a specific item to “capture” the monsters (very Pokémon-style) you have defeated and place them in a museum. All that quirkiness, however, remains trapped on the Nintendo 64, and currently, there is no official way to play this hidden gem on modern platforms.

1 Hybrid Heaven

Sci-Fi Ambition Meets Gritty Reality

N64 JRPGs Still Trapped on Original Hardware Hybrid Heaven

We have mentioned several times throughout this article the lack of JRPGs on the Nintendo 64, and the execs at Nintendo noticed that back in the day. So, their answer was Hybrid Heaven, a title developed by Konami, that ended up being an explicit attempt to “fix” that – but as you’ve probably guessed, things didn't go quite as planned.

I personally have a soft spot for its sci-fi themes, involving government conspiracies and paranormal phenomena, which were peaking in popularity during the '80s and '90s. And its story even raised some fascinating questions about the nature of reality and individual identity, giving it a much more mature edge than its peers.

10 Best Sci-Fi Games

The video game industry has given us several sci-fi games, and here are the ones that stood out because of their intriguing storyline and gameplay.

However, the game wasn't as polished as it could have been. It featured environments that felt somewhat unfinished and uninspired, lacking diversity and often feeling empty, which ultimately caused it to fly under the radar at release.

Despite these flaws, it remains a compelling title that falls into the hall of Konami games with massive potential that just stumbled on the execution. It truly is a very interesting experience for genre fans. But sadly, we will have to wait for Nintendo or Konami to remember this poor soul and bring it to a modern platform.
