Nintendo Announces Surprise Remake Of Star Fox 64 For Switch 2 And It Looks Fine

1 hour ago 2

Star Fox is Nintendo’s next exclusive for the Switch 2, and it’s a remake of Star Fox 64 from the original Nintendo 64. Nintendo revealed the game in a surprise Star Fox Direct, which shadow-dropped without any warning on Wednesday. The game’s existence uncharacteristically leaked ahead of time last month.

The game appears to retread the levels of the original but with new graphics and additional cutscenes, including mission briefings that weren’t in the N64 version. The on-rails shooter follows Fox McCloud, Falco Lombardi, Peppy Hare, and Slippy Toad as they fight to liberate the Lylat system from attacks by the exiled scientist Andross. The game will be out June 25, 2026.

Star Fox 64 was already remade once for 3DS and is currently available on Switch Online via the Expansion Pack game catalog add-on. The Switch 2 version will incorporate mouse controls, Game Chat avatars that mimic your facial expressions, and support for the re-issued N64 controller. There’s also new in-game challenges and the return of PvP modes.

Nintendo usually gives a heads up about its Nintendo Direct showcases, making this one all the weirder. It arrive just a day before the company’s latest earnings report following months of declining for its stock price beginning over the 2025 holiday period. Marketing for Star Fox‘s return comes just a month after the titular character had a big cameo in the Super Mario Galaxy Movie, where the space fighter pilot was played by Glenn Powell.

Will millennial nostalgia be enough to get a generation of parents to force their Roblox-pilled kids to play a remake of an N64 classic? We’re about to find out!

Update 5/6/2026, 6:24 p.m. ET: The headline has been updated to “looks very cool” to “looks fine” which shows you the arc of my vibes from the beginning of the Direct to its conclusion.
