Nintendo has decided to shadowdrop a Switch 2 edition of Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition with little fanfare, though that might be because it's not free.

Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition is a port of a Wii U title for the original Switch. As it launched late in the Switch's lifetime, most assumed it would be one of the first games to receive a dedicated Switch 2 upgrade, especially based on evidence found in the game's files. For whatever reason, Nintendo decided to wait until 2026 for an upgrade.

In a surprise post on the official Nintendo of America YouTube channel, a trailer for a Switch 2 version of Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition was revealed, showing off its performance upgrades. More importantly, the Switch 2 upgrade is out now, and a dedicated physical version will launch on April 16, 2026.

The Switch 2 version of Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition will feature up to 60 fps and 4 K resolution when played in TV mode. Notably, there's no new content or expansions, unlike some Nintendo Switch 2 editions.

It's worth noting that the Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition Switch 2 upgrade isn't free. Fans are already complaining about the upgrade to the existing version costing five dollars, even though it lacks new content. At the very least, it should be a freebie for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers.

It's surprising that Nintendo didn't reveal the Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition Switch 2 version during the recent Partner Direct, as it would have livened up an otherwise boring show. Hopefully, this means more Xenoblade Chronicles games will also get Switch 2 editions in the near future, though Nintendo doesn't seem too excited to promote them.
