Sixteen years after it was first released, Super Mario Galaxy 2 got a random update last night on Switch, and on top of some bug fixes, it added a new storybook segment about Rosalina. Given some of the changes The Super Mario Galaxy Movie made to the character. and Nintendo’s messaging on the matter, fans were expecting this update to finally draw a familial line between Rosalina and another character directly in the old Wii game itself. But now that fans have actually seen the story in full, they’re mostly just confused and arguing about what it all means.

Players can unlock the storybook “Epilogue” after clearing any galaxy and earning a Power Star, but if you don’t have time to boot the game back up, you can just watch it here:
The story shows Rosalina watching two shooting stars orbit one another. As she cries at the sight of them, a young girl comes up to her and tells her not to, and that her mother is waiting for her tears to dry. The young girl says she wants to find her “special someone” like the two stars found one another, and Rosalina tells her “The strongest force in all the universe is a heart that never gives up.”
It’s really not much, but Rosalina speaking with a young blonde girl sure sounds like something out of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which made Rosalina and Princess Peach canonically sisters. But some fans aren’t so sure.
I'm seeing some confusion about the new epilogue chapter "Journey" of Galaxy 2's storybook.
The girl isn't Peach, it's kid Rosalina. Rosalina is reflecting on her past, they show this symbolically by having her talk to her past self.
The earrings? Most likely her mother's. pic.twitter.com/LvTLfWw6o6

One interpretation is that the child is Rosalina, and that the adult version is speaking to her inner child as she wistfully dreams of finding her “special someone.” The two shooting stars have also alternatively been taken as symbols for Rosalina and Peach, as they are said to be blue and purple, which are almost the two’s signature colors, though Peach is more heavily associated with pink. What’s more likely is that these are meant to represent Lumas Lubba and Mari, who are featured in the storybook.
Overall, it’s kind of a nothing burger. Leave it to Nintendo to update a 16-year-old game in the middle of the night with something small but vague enough to cause tons of speculation. Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto said he would like for the movies and games to feel more connected moving forward, and for the games to adhere to the worldbuilding of the films. So fans are pretty much bracing themselves for Nintendo to make Rosalina and Peach sisters in the games. For now, however, this random Super Mario Galaxy 2 update doesn’t seem to actually do that.
“I knew it was never gonna have anything to do with the movie, but it would have been REAL funny if it did and made them siblings in the games,” a Redditor wrote. “The discourse would have been the stuff of legend.”
Despite the resemblance, Rosalina was never confirmed to be related to Peach in the games. Early in the original Galaxy game’s development, Nintendo considered tying the characters together, but this never actually came to be until The Super Mario Galaxy Movie confirmed they were sisters in the film universe.
