One Animal Crossing 3.0 addition has sparked a new trend

Animal Crossing: New Horizons received a plethora of new items with the 3.0 update, and one of them in particular has sparked an incredibly adorable design trend amongst players: Building cat cafés. At the heart of it all is the cat plushie, which comes in a variety of swatches like orange tabby and calico, giving players a diverse cat population to work with (besides the anthropomorphic ones potentially living in their town).

The cat plushie is one of the items included with the new dockside hotel. After completing four hotel rooms, the cat plushie will be available for purchase the following day in Gran's catalog for 120 Hotel Tickets. While New Horizons did previously have some cat-themed items, like a litter box and cat tower, until the 3.0 update arrived, there were no actual cats to utilize in player builds. A puppy plushie was previously introduced in the 1.6 update, but it arrived sans a cat companion.

With the introduction of a single item, players have been inspired to design their own versions of cat cafés. Some, like Reddit user ButIDigress79, have opted to convert the cafés previously built in the Happy Home Paradise DLC (which function as a patronizable business) into a cat theme. Their build in particular features a lot of creative repurposing of objects, like mushrooms from the Mario set and a Bunny Day tree reframed as cat climbables and activities.

Other players, like YouTuber zoibean, have instead remodeled their entire home into a cat paradise. This method allows for differently-themed areas — theirs, for example, includes a main room where coffee is made, a playroom, and what they describe as a "classy cat tea lounge."

Many of the other new items in the 3.0 update, like the mug shelves, marble kitchen island, and circle cushion have definitely aided these builds. These additions, paired with old favorites like the espresso machine, food added in the 2.0 update, and the aforementioned cat items, have come together to create an absolutely meow-velous trend.
