Don’t even try to disguise it: we all know that whenever we hear news about a highly anticipated game’s release calendar, our minds immediately brace for impact.

That’s because, nowadays, we have become all too accustomed to reading lengthy corporate apologies about sudden delays or unexpected production roadblocks. Of course, we completely understand when a game genuinely needs more time in the oven to achieve its true potential – after all, nobody wants a rushed product or one that makes developers crunch.

However, it seems that Capcom loves to completely catch the entire community off guard, delivering some genuinely good news for action-RPG fans: the long-awaited return of the Onimusha franchise is actually coming a lot sooner than we all expected.

Shifting Away From Vice City?

The Japanese publisher just announced a major shake-up for Onimusha: Way of the Sword. Instead of launching on its previously scheduled date of September 25, the upcoming dark fantasy samurai adventure has had its release window pushed forward by three whole weeks.

This means that the game is now officially locked in to slash its way onto the Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on September 4, 2026. A specific reason for the sudden change, however, was not officially revealed.

“The swordplay action game is now striking weeks sooner than anticipated, so players can leap into battle and absorb themselves in the Onimusha series’ long-awaited return as soon as possible,” reads Capcom's official press release.

While a three-week shift might seem like a minor administrative adjustment on paper (I mean, the developers didn't even give a single reason why), players are already loudly speculating that there’s a strategic reason behind this move. And its name is Grand Theft Auto 6, launching on November 19.

So maybe Onimusha just wants to keep its sword as far away from Vice City as humanly possible. Because let's face it: being a comfortable number of weeks away from the most anticipated game of the decade definitely sounds a whole lot better than releasing anywhere near its catastrophic cultural blast radius.

The game is now officially locked in to slash its way onto the Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on September 4, 2026.

However, moving to a new neighborhood on the calendar means Onimusha will now find itself rubbing shoulders with a very specific crowd of early September releases.

Its brand-new September 4 release date places it right after The Blood of Dawnwalker, a highly anticipated dark fantasy action-RPG from Rebel Wolves (a new studio famously led by the former director of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt). On the exact same day, Switch 2 owners will also be diving into Orbitals, a frantic co-op platformer centered around rescuing survivors on a ruined space station that looks like it could be the next It Takes Two.

On top of that, Onimusha: Way of the Sword lands just days before the September 8 launch of Halloween: The Game, a survival horror title featuring robust story and multiplayer modes. It sure is a crowded week, but a samurai should have no problem holding his own against the competition, it seems.
