2026 is proving to be a great and exciting year for new game releases, with the year having already launched several Game of the Year contenders, such as Pokémon Pokopia, Resident Evil Requiem, and Pragmata.
However, there are still about eight more months of the year left for other new titles to debut therein, from highly anticipated third-person shooters like Gears of War: E-Day to intriguing first-person shooters like Clockwork Revolution.

10 Third-Person Games That Deserve a Remaster or Remake
These 10 classic third-person games of various genres deserve to be remastered or remade soon
Among all of the new games expected to launch this year, some of the most promising and ones that should already have gamers' attention are the upcoming open-world titles due to the ways they're expected to innovate in gameplay and world design and how some will refresh longstanding franchises for the modern day.
10 Frostrail
Chugging Through a Frozen Wasteland
This year is already chock-full of intriguing open-world indie games, such as Square Glade Games' cozy van-simulator Outbound, but there are still a ton of other open-world indie titles that players should look out for, including FakeFish's FPS survival game Frostrail.
Slated to launch in an early access state by the end of the year, Frostrail will have players explore the frozen wastelands of a once great empire on foot and by a customizable, steam-powered train solo or with other players via online co-op.
Essentially, Frostrail is a perfect mixture 7 Days to Die and Snowpiercer, as not only will players have to ration their limited supplies and risk death from hypothermia, with the train being their only consistent safe haven, but they'll also have to face supernatural zombie-like horrors out in the snowy ruins.
9 Romestead
A Roman Stardew Valley
Not every open-world has to be developed from a first-person or an over-the-shoulder third-person perspective, with some of the most unique open-world titles utilizing less conventional perspectives from other gaming genres to standout among the crowd, which can be seen in Beartwigs' 2D top-down RPG Romestead.
Set in an alternate Roman Empire where a mysterious apocalyptic event left the empire in ruins, Romestead has players strive to rebuild civilization in gameplay that's similar to Stardew Valley at first with building structures and farms and maintaining strong relationships with townsfolk NPCs.
However, players will eventually need to leave their burgeoning society and set out into the procedurally generated, mythical monster-filled world solo or in eight-player co-op for loot in The Legend of Zelda-like dungeons, to gather resources, and to restore glory to Roman gods.
8 Dreadmoor
Fishing in Monster-Filled Swamps
Sometimes the best open-world titles are those that are relatively simplistic in terms of gameplay but feature enthralling narratives and world design or simply just allow players to live their dreams as fishing boat captains, which is exactly the case in Dream Dock's first and third-person game Dreadmoor.
Set in the southern, swampy waters of a mysteriously submerged world, Dreadmoor has players captain a small fishing trawler as they set out to catch the rarest and largest of prey with fishing rods and harpoons to trade in scattered settlements in order to upgrade the vessel and gain access to new equipment and crafting recipes.
Players aren't the biggest thing in wetlands, however, and they'll have to be on the watch for massive, mutated sea creatures which can not only steal prizes from players but consume the player themselves if they're not careful, with even the few remaining dry land areas being filled with monsters lying in wait near much-needed supplies.

7 Echoes of Aincrad
Sword Art Online's Expansive JRPG
New open-world games don't have to be built from original concepts, with arguably some of the best open-world titles being based on pre-established, fan-favorite franchises set for an easier route to success, like Bandai Namco and Game Studio Inc.'s upcoming third-person JRPG Echoes of Aincrad.
Set in the popular anime and manga Sword Art Online universe, Echoes of Aincrad is a single-player JRPG where players get to create their very own SAO character and set out to explore the world of Aincrad filled with floating castles, diverse cities, and perilous dungeons and confront fantastical monsters in real-time combat.
While Echoes of Aincrad is a single-player game, unlike its VRMMORPG inspiration, players won't have to go on this journey alone as they'll be able to travel and bond with one NPC companion at a time who will aid them in combat, ranging from the two-handed swordsman Zash to the comical, dagger-wielding info broker Argo.
6 Agefield High: Rock the School
A Bully-Like High School Journey
Agefield High: Rock the School
Many open-world titles are set in epic sci-fi and fantasy worlds, but occasionally the best open-world games are those that are a bit more realistic and reflective of events people have experienced in their own modern lives, with one such game being Refugium Games' Agefield High: Rock the School.
A third-person action-adventure game similar to Rockstar Games' Bully, Agefield has players live the 2002 high school life of Sam, who strives to make new friends in school, get with girls before graduation, and show antagonistic jocks what for all while either attempting to get good grades or skipping class entirely.
Sam isn't a bully himself, so the game isn't framed with players acting like jerks from the get-go, but players can be mean to their classmates and teachers if they want to be and skip class to skate, bike, or generally cause chaos in Agefield's neighborhood, town center, and countryside, allowing players to relive their own high school life however they desire.
5 Gothic 1 Remake
Return to the Valley of Mines
This year may be full of promising indie games, but it's just as full of remasters and remakes of classic titles such as Halo: Campaign Evolved and Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, with one of the most anticipated being Alkimia Interactive's Gothic 1 Remake slated to launch in June.
A faithful remake of the groundbreaking 2001 classic, the Gothic remake is a fantasy medieval action RPG set in the Valley of the Mines of the Kingdom of Myrtana, with players embodying a new prisoner of the mines tasked with finding Fire Mages and eventually helping free the miners from a magical barrier.
The original Gothic game was highly influential on the RPG genre, going on to directly inspire the development of The Witcher games, making the Gothic 1 Remake a perfect chance for fantasy RPG fans to experience one of the greatest fantasy games of all time.
4 Splatoon Raiders
Exploring the Spirhalite Islands
Nintendo's Splatoon series has managed to become one of their most successful new IPs since its debut on the Wii U as one of Nintendo's best multiplayer series, but this year the Inkling and Octoling-focused franchise will explore an entirely new genre of games: an open-world single-player game.
Splatoon Raiders is the first spinoff of the Splatoon franchise and one of the most recent games announced for the Nintendo Switch 2, with the game set to launch in late July, allowing players to create their own Inkling or Octoling as they set out to explore the Spirhalite Islands for treasure this summer.
While Splatoon Raiders is heavily marketed as a single-player experience, players won't have to explore and fend off the aquatic enemies of the Spirhalite Islands alone, as they can be joined by one member of the band Deep Cut or play together in a more difficult four-player PvE co-op mode.

3 Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced
Edward Kenway's Grand Return
ubisoft.comAssassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced
As mentioned before, 2026 is full of remasters and remakes of beloved gaming classics, with one of which having just recently been officially confirmed after months of leaks and rumors: Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced.
A remake of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag slated to launch in early July, Resynced will have players relive the memories of Welsh pirate turned assassin Edward Kenway as he sets out to earn riches and freedom in the early 18th century West Indies aboard his trusty brig ship, the Jackdaw.
The story of Resynced mostly remains true to the original, but there are several notable changes made to enhance Kenway's journey this time around, such as the removal of Black Flag's original modern-day segments, the reworking of ground combat to play similar to Assassin's Creed Shadows, and the addition of three new Jackdaw officers to name a few.
2 The Blood of Dawnwalker
The Witcher's Potential Successor
One of the most promising games overall set to launch later this year, let alone among open-world games, is Rebel Wolves' debut third-person fantasy RPG The Blood of Dawnwalker.
Created by many former CD Projekt developers who worked on The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Cyberpunk 2077, Dawnwalker follows 14th century young man Coen who, after becoming a vampiric Dawnwalker, must use his limited abilities to help free his valley from the tyrannical Brencis and his cadre of ancient vampires.
With what Little Wolves' has shown of Dawnwalker so far, the game's lore is already incredibly rich and tantalizing, but its gameplay mechanics are equally enticing, as Coen only has 30 in-game days to free his valley and he can only use his powers at night, requiring players to strategize when and how to complete certain quests.
1 Grand Theft Auto VI
The Most Anticipated Game of 2026
Without a doubt, the open-world title that should already have every gamers' attention is Rockstar Games' fast-approaching juggernaut, Grand Theft Auto VI.
The highly anticipated follow-up to the monumental Grand Theft Auto V, GTA VI will have players embody lovers Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos in the crime-filled, Florida-inspired state of Leonida as they strive to make a new life for themselves and move on from their troubled pasts.
With how successful GTA V was, everyone is expecting GTA VI's campaign and its new iteration of GTA Online to become the game of the decade, with several other game publishers delaying or speeding up their own game launches so as to avoid competition with the upcoming open-world game.
