The portal to Vampyrium has finally opened in the world of Old School Runescape, and in this land of crimson waters and darkened skies, there are some veritable training methods for us MMO enthusiasts to get our hands on.

One of the most anticipated features is the introduction of Leechfin fishing, a new high-intensity training method for those fisherfolk who prefer something a little more active. This method has players head over to the winding rivers of Vampyrium and partake in a Guitar Hero-esque sequence. Does that sound confusing? Well, worry not, it’ll all make sense soon.

Let’s take a look at this new fishing method and all the uses for this brand-new fish!

Prerequisites

Before you think about heading over to Morytanial, you’ll naturally need to have completed the new quest, Blood Moon Rises. This is arguably the hardest quest ever released in OSRS, and the final boss fight against Drakan is sure to test even the most hardened of players.

In addition, you’ll need 78 Fishing to catch the Leechfin, or you can boost it to that level with an Admiral Pie at 73 or a Super Fishing Potion at 72. However, this probably isn’t worth it until you get closer to the level and have something like Preserve.

Finally, you’ll need a Big Fishing Net to catch the Leechfin. Grab one of these from the Grand Exchange or from the spawn in the Fishing Guild. If you want to cut up the Leechfin for extra profit, bring a knife.

The Leechfin Method

How it Works

Firstly, grab your Drakan’s Medallion and head over to Castle Drakan. Jump through the portal to find yourself in Vampyrium.

Head east to the bank, then follow the Aranei Scout just a bit south. From here, head northeast past the entrance to the Maggot King, then go a little farther east until you reach the twin bridges spanning the river.

Once you’re here, head over to either bridge and click Align-net. At once, the Leechfin will begin swimming towards you in 3 distinct lanes. You simply need to click left, middle, or right, and you’ll start catching every single fish that swims into your net. If you’ve done the fishing method in the Moons of Peril dungeon, this is much the same.

The best method to catch every Leechfin that comes towards you is to click just in front of it, to turn your character in time. You’ll start to get the feel of it after a few inventories.

Maximising Experience

After a short while, I reached a maximum experience rate of 120,000 xp per hour by focusing extremely hard. However, to do this, you need to catch pretty much every Leechfin that comes your way and drop your entire inventory on the ground before the next wave arrives. You'll need to shift-click drop these to make it in time.

This is definitely possible to maintain with practice, but chances are you’re more likely to earn 100k-110k XP if you’re not focusing as hard. If you enjoy 3-tick training, you’ll feel right at home with this method.

If you leave your character sitting still or too long without changing lanes, they will quickly stop fishing, meaning you can’t really AFK this.

Vials of Blood

For those who aren’t as interested in the fishing experience, you can choose to instead create Vials of Blood by squeezing Blood Sacs into an empty vial. Vials of Blood were previously available only after completing the Theatre of Blood, so this is a nice option for those who prefer the solo experience and don’t fancy their chances against Verzik.

By bringing a Knife with you, you can cut the Leechfins, granting a token amount of cooking XP and a chance to produce a Blood Sac. 50 Blood Sacs equals 1 Vial of Blood.

You’ll quickly notice that this takes a long time to produce a decent number of Blood Vials, while massively reducing the XP you get because you won’t catch every fish. However, it is a nice bonus bit of cash for those who want to sell them or passively recharge their Scythe.
