I’m always saying that Overwatch is in a great place these days, and one of the most exciting things Blizzard has done with the hero shooter in the past few years to really flex its hero design muscles is introduce Stadium, a MOBA-inspired build-based mode that lets you craft a hero’s kit over the course of several rounds. It results in some pretty ridiculous ability interactions, all in an effort to create the most exaggerated version of the “hero fantasy” possible for each character. However, despite the mode being a major shot in the arm for Overwatch when it launched in 2025, Blizzard has announced it won’t be adding more characters or maps to the line-up.
Game director Aaron Keller broke the news in a Director’s Take blog, revealing that both ranked and unranked Stadium matches account for only three percent of Overwatch‘s daily player base, and thus Blizzard has deemed it a better use of its resources to pivot those team members to other sides of the game.
Overall, 5v5 has maintained its majority and 6v6 continues to see an increase in popularity. Stadium, meanwhile, has settled into a dedicated, smaller audience. With this in mind, while we’ll continue supporting Stadium with seasonal balance updates, rank resets, and rewards, we’re not planning on expanding Stadium with new Heroes or maps. Instead, we’re taking what lessons we’ve gleaned from building it and applying those lessons (and those talented devs) to our future plans.
This is disappointing but not very surprising. Stadium is a really fun mode full of chaotic plays and strategic buildcrafting, but it also requires a significantly higher time investment than any other mode in the game, so it’s easier for players to just jump into more standard ways of play. At least the mode isn’t going away, and Blizzard will be keeping an eye on the balance moving forward. It would be a real shame if the whole thing got thrown out and no one could play it anymore. The full rundown of the Overwatch playerbase according to Blizzard’s data is as follows:
- Unranked Role Queue 5v5: ~54% of daily players
- Ranked Role Queue 5v5: ~37%
- Unranked Open Queue 6v6: ~19%
- Ranked Open Queue 6v6: ~8%
- Unranked Mystery Heroes 6v6: ~4%
- Stadium Ranked: ~3%
- Stadium Unranked: ~3%
Only 33 of Overwatch‘s heroes were added to Stadium, as Blizzard had been gradually adding more to the roster over time since the team had to create custom builds and abilities for each of them, which included significant tweaks to their kits. The final line-up includes:
