Palworld: Where to Find Ancient Bark, Ancient Lava and Ancient Bone

With the recent improvements to the Protected Wildlife Sanctuaries in Palworld 1.0, we were also blessed with 3 new types of crafting materials to accompany them!

These materials may be used only to craft certain types of armour and other trinkets, but that doesn’t mean they’re not useful. In fact, some items crafted from these ingredients are incredibly handy and will help you navigate the map far more easily.

Of course, these materials aren’t as common as the ores and wood you're used to, and getting them can be quite a pain, especially with those pesky drones flying about. So let’s take a look at how to get each ancient item, and what we can use them for.

Ancient Bark

The first of these can be found in Wildlife Sanctuary 1, the large domed area southwest of the main starting zone.

To get here, you’ll need a surfing Pal in order to cross the ocean. Unfortunately, there aren’t any fast-travel or respawn points here, so every time you want to gather ingredients or catch some exclusive Pals, you’ll have to head here on foot. Naturally, this also means you should try to fill your inventory every time, so stock up!

While wandering around this wildlife preserve, you’ll see a bunch of tree stumps with a shiny material protruding from the top. This is your Ancient Bark, and you’ll need an Axe in order to harvest it.

If you're coming here with around level 30+ Pals, I would recommend you bring at least a Refined Metal Axe to make the process as quick and painless as possible. In addition, bring a Pal with decent Lumbering to help to harvest!

While you're there, you might as well take out the Grizzbolt, which is the area boss of the Zone. Make sure you start Zoe’s quest after defeating her for the first time.

The Bark can be used for the following items:

• Air Walker MK 1
• Islander’s Tool Belt
• Pal Tamer’s Glasses
• Reptyro Charm

Among these items, the Islander’s Tool Belt is particularly useful early on, when you’re carrying a lot of ore or wood and gathering materials yourself without automation. It’s worth keeping this on you, and then swapping it out for something more offensive when entering particularly tricky boss fights.

Ancient Lava

The next material can be found in Wildlife Sanctuary 2, which is located between Sakurajima and the Volcanic Island.

Once more, you’ll need to surf here just like before. However, the drones in this sanctuary are far more difficult to avoid, and upon spotting you, they will shoot and kill you on sight. You’re going to need to be pretty stealthy and patient while you’re mining here, or you’ll be defeated in a flash.

While exploring, you’ll see a bunch of glowing blue rocks that look similar to the blue lava, which damages you upon stepping on it. Here, you’ll need to use your pickaxe to mine the lava rocks at a decent speed. Once more, you should really have either a Refined Metal Pickaxe or even a Pal Metal pickaxe at this point. Again, bring a Pal with a decent mining stat to help you out here.

The area boss in this zone is level 55, while the Pals wandering around are in the 40s, so make sure you have decent armour and water-based Pals to protect yourself. Inside the cave on this island lies Astegon, a Dark / Dragon-type Pal, which is certainly worth picking up if you’re ready for the challenge.

Ancient Lava can be used for the following items:

• Air Walker MK 2
• Ring of Trust
• Warsect Terra’s Belt
• Wumpo Charm

Those struggling against Bjorn, the 7th tower boss, might want to consider picking up the Wumpo Charm to improve their ice resistance.

Ancient Bone

The final material can be found in the 3rd and final Wildlife Sanctuary, found northeast of the Desert region.

Firstly, head to the Deep Sands Dune Fast-travel point, and surf or fly northeast towards the dome. As soon as you get there, you’ll realise that this area is the most heavily guarded of all the islands, so you’ll need to be extra careful.

While scouting around, look for the dark ribcage bone structures that glint. Once more, bring your best pickaxe, and mine the bones as fast as you can. The main problem is that many of the bone spawns are directly in the drones' path, so it’s very easy to get spotted if you’re not paying close attention. Continuously watch the sky, and learn the paths of the Drones before heading in.

Further into the zone, you’ll see a large, domed structure that houses the sanctuary's area boss. This Pal is Frostallion Noct, level 65 and can be a real pain to deal with if you’re not properly prepared.

The Ancient Bones can be used for the following items:

• Air Walker MK3
• Air Walker EX
• Dogen Emblem
• Silvegis Emblem
• Phantom Ring
• Vanguard Charm
• Wandering Merchant Charm

There are a bunch of really powerful items to be crafted here. The boots offered here will massively upgrade your movement capabilities, allowing you to aerial dash and jump multiple times.

The Dogen Emblem is fantastic for boosting both your attack and your Pals' attack, while the Silvegis Emblem will significantly buff your defences.

Finally, you have both Charms, each granting level 3 Heat and Cold Resistance, allowing you to wear a different piece of body armour that specialises in protecting you from something else.
