Less than a day after Paramount Pictures announced the creation of their dedicated gaming division, Paramount Games Studio, the new studio has unveiled one of their earliest and arguably most exciting games yet with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin.
Developed by Platinum Games, the Japanese developer famous for the Bayonetta series, The Last Ronin is an AAA action-adventure game based directly on the critically acclaimed 2020 IDW comic book of the same name written by Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird as well as veteran TMNT writer Tom Waltz.
Guild Wars 3 Is Real, and the Internet Has Completely Lost Its Mind
Nobody expected Guild Wars 3 today, though everyone was hopeful it was coming. The community has completely lost it, and honestly, fair enough.
While The Last Ronin game was originally announced to be in development in 2023, about a year after the final issue of The Last Ronin's first series released, its appearance at the 2026 Summer Games Fest marks its first proper appearance after some rocky behind the scenes issues.
The Road To The Last Ronin Game
The Last Ronin story originally began in 1987 when Laird and Eastman envisioned a Dark Knight Returns-like story that would have ended their original TMNT run, but it wouldn't be properly developed into an official comic until 2020, when Eastman, Laird, and Waltz worked together to release the five-issue miniseries.
Set in the near future where Shredder's grandson, Oroku Hiroto, has taken over Manhattan with the Foot Clan and closed off the island from the rest of the world in an oppressive fascist state, The Last Ronin sees one last Ninja Turtle return to the city to brutally avenge his fallen father, friends, and brothers alongside help from a few remaining allies.
The Last Ronin was an immediate hit despite its darker nature compared to most TMNT media and soon resulted in multiple comic book sequels and spinoffs being developed alongside the announcement of a video game adaptation in 2023.
youtube.com/@paramountgames/videosIn 2024, it was even announced that The Last Ronin would be developed into an R-rated live-action film written by Tyler Burton Smith, who worked on Alan Wake II, Quantum Break, and the 2019 remake of Child's Play.
However, development on the film stopped in late 2025 following the Paramount-Skydance merger. There are no plans to revive the film, but The Last Ronin still lives on in both comic book and video game form.
The Last Ronin sees one last Ninja Turtle return to the city to brutally avenge his fallen father, friends, and brothers alongside help from a few remaining allies.
The Last Ronin game's new teaser trailer showed off New York City sewer tunnels, a manhole cover, a sai in the water, Casey Jones' mask, a fence, a metallic foot, a lone katana, the destroyed Sullivan and Blecker street sign, and a red moon, all to a darker toned version of the classic TMNT theme song.
All of these elements appeared in the original TLR comic book, with many hinting at popular characters' deaths and the state of NYC under the rule of Oroku Hiroto, suggesting that players will likely be able to play through the Last Ronin's quest of vengeance as well as the fall of the other Ninja Turtles.
While there currently is no release window for The Last Ronin game yet, it may launch sometime next year, given that Paramount already has an online shop available for the game and that 2027 would mark the 40th anniversary of the original TLR concept.
