The 0.5 update to Path of Exile 2 is very much on its way, and it’s clear that fans are champing at the bit for just a smidgen of new information.

This has certainly been exacerbated by the fact that this patch release was delayed for a month, going against Grinding Gear Games usual 4-month League cycle. So just what has GGG been cooking over there, and was the wait time worth it?

Well, in my opinion, PoE 2 fans are in for a real spectacle this time around. What’s an extra month for a ton of extra polish? When the content is this good, I’m more than happy to let the team do what is needed. As Shigeru Miyamoto said, “A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad.”

For those struggling to pick a Class in Path of Exile II, this list covers a selection of great early-game builds to get you started!

So just what’s in store for us this time around? Well, more than you can imagine. 0.5 is going to be revolutionary and give PoE 2 fans content for many months to come!

Revitalised Mechanics

So far, PoE 2 has been in a bit of a weird spot. Once you’ve finished the Interlude Acts and the main storyline, the game kind of drops you into a limbo state, where you have this huge expansive world map, but very little direction or reason to keep grinding.

This all changes now! Every single endgame League mechanic has been given a huge overhaul. From Breach, to Ritual, to Expedition and even Delirium. Not only do every single one of these mechanics have a designated area on the map, but they even have their own quest, helping you navigate the early hours of the endgame experience.

These much-needed improvements give players a sense of direction when starting their endgame experience, massively helping retain the attention of those who might feel their PoE 2 experience is coming to a close. The opposite is, in fact, true; you’ve only just begun!

And not only that, but the way you play each of these has changed, too. From new revamped fog mechanics, to bizarre alien trees, ocean exploration, and even new pinnacle bosses. Not only does this breathe new life into previously played experiences, but it makes them last longer too, giving you even more to do in the endgame.

These much-needed improvements give players a sense of direction when starting their endgame experience, massively helping retain the attention of those who might feel their PoE 2 experience is coming to a close.

The way the Atlas works is changing, too. Now players can obtain every single node from the Atlas tree, instead of having to choose a specific direction to follow. Less decision-making, more action! However, to shake this up, there are options within the tree as well, allowing for smaller yet still important means of customisation.

Brand-New Content

And, of course, that’s just the start. Not only do we have a new League mechanic, with the Runes of Aldur introducing new endgame features and crafting mechanics, but we’re also getting some fresh Ascendancies for the Huntress and the Monk, allowing for crazy new ways to play.

If you've been struggling to get through the Campaign of Path of Exile II while playing a Monk, then this guide is perfect for you.

But, if that wasn’t enough, we’re getting a bunch of interesting new uniques, along with a challenge system. This system will offer league-specific challenges, allowing players to test themselves to the very limit, in exchange for some Runes of Aldur-specific cosmetic rewards! While not exactly essential, this once more adds way more content to the endgame, keeping players engaged.

Oh, and did I mention there's a gigantic Precurser Fortress to explore?

Quality of Life Enhancements

We’re also being blessed with some quality-of-life improvements that smooth out the experience for new and returning players. For example, the main story has been streamlined with new environmental landmarks, allowing players to zip through it and spend less time wandering in circles.

In addition, one of the features I’m most excited about, a build planner, is being implemented directly into the game, allowing players to import builds from other sites so they don’t have to keep alt-tabbing every 5 seconds. This is a massive win for newer players who might not understand how all the PoE 2 mechanics work, or perhaps don’t have the time to.

All in all, 0.5 looks to be perhaps the biggest update GGG has ever pushed out, and the extra wait time is certainly going to be worth our while. I hope you’ve all enjoyed the early access, because this may very well be the final step before the official 1.0 launch of Path of Exile 2 near the end of 2026.

It’s a good time to be a Path of Exile fan, that’s for sure! The Return of the Ancients update releases on May 29th for PC, Steam, PlayStation, Xbox, and Epic Games Store.
