After years of speculation, Atlus finally announced Persona 6 during the Xbox Games Showcase 2026. Unfortunately, the company dropped the ball, with a short trailer that seemed more akin to a horror game than the Persona that fans were expecting.

Persona 5 launched back in 2016 in Japan, releasing a year later worldwide. This was the game that propelled the franchise to mainstream attention, with countless crossovers, and even its protagonist representing the series in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The game will receive an updated release in 2020, called Persona 5 Royal, but fans have been eager to see what Atlus has been cooking for the next entry in the franchise.

Rumors about Persona 6 appearing at the Xbox Games Showcase turned out to be legit, as it was finally announced at the event. However, the Persona 6 debut wasn't what fans were expecting at all, looking very much like the title card had been slapped onto the wrong footage.

Persona 6's Debut Trailer Was Bizarre And Unexciting

A good chunk of the Persona 6 trailer involves a slow pan through a graveyard, while radio static keeps interrupting the somber music. The camera stops on a headless statue, which a shadowy figure reaches out to touch. The footage then switches between spooky shots of red liquid, a face composed of drawings, and hands pointing at something, all culminating in the title, and the reveal that the game's main color is green.

The only real information in the trailer is that Persona 6 is coming to Xbox Series X/S, Steam, and PlayStation 5, with a day one launch on Game Pass. There was no hint of a release date or even a release year. For all fans know, Persona 6 could be launching in 2028. There was also no information regarding a Nintendo Switch 2 release, which was also true for the Persona 4 Revival release date trailer.

However, the Persona 6 debut wasn't what fans were expecting at all, looking very much like the title card had been slapped onto the wrong footage.

In short, the Persona 6 trailer was a massive disappointment, relying solely on name value to get any kind of excitement. Where is the flashy anime aesthetic? Where's the school setting? Where's the any kind of information about the game except that a graveyard might be involved? Outside of the jumbled face shown in the screenshot above, where were the characters?

Is Persona 6 going to be a horror game? Will the player be maintaining their year-long school schedule while attending Monster High? Actually, that does sound pretty awesome, but that's just speculation. The trailer basically offered fans nothing, and looked like something totally different than what they were expecting, but not in a good way. The Persona 6 trailer could easily have been for the new Silent Hill or Resident Evil.

The lack of a release date suggests that Persona 6 is still a long ways off, and the overall lack of content in the trailer supports that theory. The fact that there wasn't even a "2027" to get the fans excited was also a huge miss. If the game is still two years away, then why even bother announcing it so far out, especially when there was barely anything in the trailer for fans to chew over?

It's entirely possible (and likely) that Persona 6 falls into the same gameplay and story veins as its predecessors, but they weren't anywhere to be seen in the trailer. Maybe Atlus thought the Persona 4 Revival release date announcement would give fans a taste of what they want, so they could try something a little different? If so, then the plan didn't work, and a lot of the excitement for Persona 6 has been lost.
