Covering the video games industry since 2017, with experience in news, articles, lists, and reviews (and I blame The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask for that).
If you are a fan of RPGs and want a third-person version: Tayná Garcia is a Brazilian journalist (but you can call her Tay) who ended up working with video games after finishing Zelda: Majora's Mask when she was a kid. With more than eight years of experience in the segment, she has been an assistant editor at Jovem Nerd in the past and is currently a contributor at DualShockers and a writer for gaming magazines for Editora Europa. Oh, and she may like Hideo Kojima a bit too much.
Right under every gamer’s nose, quite an unusual phenomenon is shaking up the rankings of the most highly-rated games by users on Metacritic.
That’s because, suddenly, Disney’s Cory In The House – yes, I’m talking about that 2008 title for the Nintendo DS based on the That's So Raven spin-off – is tracing a meteoric trajectory on the site that aggregates critics’ reviews and player opinions.
At the time of writing, the game boasts an impressive user score of 9.3! This number alone was enough to place it ahead of legendary and critically acclaimed titles such as The Last of Us, Resident Evil 4, Half-Life 2, Chrono Trigger, every Zelda title, and even the multi-award-winning Baldur’s Gate 3.
Currently, Cory is tied for second place with masterpieces like Metal Gear Solid 1 and 3, Silent Hill 2, and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. As of now, only last year's standout RPG, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, prevents the Disney star from claiming the absolute lead, since it has a staggering 9.6.

10 Worst Games of the Last Decade (According to OpenCritic)
We don't enjoy beating a dead horse, but it's worth looking back every now to avoid repeating past mistakes.
And this unexpected surge is happening because Disney’s Cory In The House is receiving a flood of extremely positive reviews from users, accompanied by comments describing the game as a “masterpiece,” “spectacular,” and a “must-play,” alongside every other glowing adjective you can imagine.
“One of the most spectacular games I've played in the last decade. The charm it presents is unique, and there is no other work that offers anything like it,” wrote one user, while another went even further, calling it “the best piece of entertainment in human history; words can’t describe how I feel about this game, definitely a must-play.”
Just one more, so you get the idea of the scale: “Greatest game ever and the best anime adaptation we will ever see. Truly a one-of-a-kind masterpiece.” And players are continuing to submit extremely positive reviews as we speak, so it would not be surprising to see its score climb even higher in the coming days!
Masterpiece or Meme? Why Cory is Taking Over The Internet
Basically, this Disney’s Cory In The House phenomenon is happening because of a long-standing inside joke within the gaming community – yes, an internet meme that has surprisingly endured for over a decade!
This culture of artificially boosting the game’s score to grant it a label close to a “cult status” began on gaming forums, such as 4chan and ResetEra, previously triggering similar waves on Amazon and GameFAQs in years past.
This number alone was enough to place it ahead of legendary and critically acclaimed titles such as The Last of Us
Meaning that this is not the first time that this has happened! For instance, back in 2013, the game actually hit an unbelievable score of 9.7 on Metacritic due to a similar “campaign” organized by the players.
And, by searching some current gaming forums, we can immediately find a lot of players who are now determined to make Cory In The House the highest-rated user game on all of Metacritic, with the specific goal of dethroning Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, the game that took first place less than a year ago.
While the situation is quite hilarious and certainly is giving gamers a good laugh, we cannot forget that cases like this show just how easily user averages can be manipulated on platforms that aggregate players’ opinions and reviews. The same happens with “review bombs,” when users tank a game's score out of rage, meaning it triggers only extremely negative and angry words instead of laughs. So, yes, we can enjoy the laughs that Cory is bringing for us now, but while also recognizing that these kinds of platforms remain vulnerable to these actions.
As of now, Metacritic has not issued a statement regarding whether it will take action against the wave of positive reviews for Disney’s Cory In The House.
