PlayStation Breaks Six-Day Silence After Announcing The End Of Discs And Gets Immediately Roasted: ‘Physical Forever You Cowards’

Fans were wondering when the PlayStation X account would start posting again after its July 1 announcement that Sony would be ditching game discs in 2028. The answer is today, July 7, almost exactly six days later. The console maker shared a short video promoting its new wireless arcade fight stick. It did not go well. “Wireless fightstick? More like spineless corpo,” responded the gaming preservation advocate account, Does it Play.

Sony has been getting bullied across all of its social media accounts, including the ones that have nothing to do with gaming, ever since it announced it would end physical media for its consoles beginning in 2026. This means the PlayStation 6 will be the company’s first machine to be digital-only, a move that has pissed off a lot of people, even ones who don’t normally chime in on the latest gaming controversy.

Wireless fightstick? More like spineless corpo. Feel sorry for everyone involved in that project. They are the sacrificial lamb for the next tsunami of criticism towards you, Sony. All we care about is that you reverse the decision to strip everyone of ownership over their games.

In less than an hour, Sony’s fight stick video received over 12,000 negative comments and nearly 4,000 angry quote-tweets. If there is anyone in there defending the company’s move to all-digital, I couldn’t find it. “As was evident, Playstation has followed the strategy of acting as if nothing had happened,” one fan wrote. “They think we’re going to forget it easily, but we can’t allow that. They’re trying to kill physical games with lies and using us players as an excuse. It’s shameful.”

A petition being circulated by PNP Games CEO Jade Pearce has already surged to over 160,000 signatures, and some of the most devoted PlayStation fans claim to be debating whether they will even bother upgrading to PS6 at all when it comes out or just simply move over to PC instead. While also a digital environment, the open platform provides more choice and DRM-free versions of many games. Underlining the widespread criticism of Sony ditching physical media is the fact that it just recently removed digital movie purchases from customers’ accounts after license agreements lapsed.

Will Sony change its mind? It did the first time it announced the end of the PS3 and Vita storefronts, though many seem less confident that the console maker will change course this time rather than doubling-down now that the band-aid’s been ripped off and slowly moving marching players forward to a license-only gaming future. One of the factories that made PlayStation game discs has reportedly already begun pivoting its tooling to be able to manufacture other products
