The savings come as Sony continues to reel from widespread backlash over its decision to end support for physical game releases on its consoles. The move has spurred outrage, emulation advances, and boycotts, as it will ultimately further diminish consumer rights around game ownership. Shortly after, Sony subsidiary Crunchyroll announced it would restrict access to its store — which, among other things, sells physical releases for anime — to a higher subscription tier for the service. While it's likely this PlayStation sale was planned before the pushback over these decisions, the timing is certainly convenient.
