The Pokémon Go fanbase is in an uproar, as the winner of a regional championship has had their title stripped due to what has been labeled an unsportsmanlike celebration, despite it being incredibly tame.
Victory celebrations have been part of in-person video game tournaments since the beginning, and the line where they become an issue is when they involve the losing player. It's one thing to celebrate a victory, but mocking an opponent to their face is the point where things can get nasty, so it's discouraged, if not considered a bannable offense, depending on the game and its competitive scene.

It seems that even the mildest victory celebrations are too much for The Pokémon Company, as the winner of the 2026 Pokémon Orlando Regional Championships, Firestar73, has had their win revoked. According to ItsAXN on Twitter/X, this was due to "unsportsmanlike" behavior, as reflected on the Pokémon Go Championships website, with the other player grantedvictory.
Pokémon Go Has Disqualified Player For Incredibly Tame Victory Celebration
So, why did Firestar73 have their victory revoked? That is the question that's baffling fans. Maybe it's because he took off his headphones before the match had fully played out, or it was the fist-pumping? Either way, there was no shade thrown at the opponent, as they shook hands shortly after.
Naturally, fans have come out in support of Firestar73, with accusations of match-fixing already being thrown at the tournament organizers. Firestar73's celebration is tame compared to what is seen in most competitive games, regardless of the franchise's intended age range, and losing a major tournament over it is seen as a far too severe penalty.

At worst, Firestar73 should have received a warning or a reprimand, as most people wouldn't realize that his level of celebration was excessive. But stripping him of a major win stinks of poor performance and dodgy behavior from the judges.
Hopefully, fan and player outcry will lead to this decision being reversed, as it affects the integrity of Pokémon Go tournaments. If a player can have a hard-earned win removed over a whim, then why should anyone compete? Should players just sit there with their hands in their pockets when they win? It doesn't exactly make for an exciting competitive experience if people have to act like they're in school.
