You must pet the Fidough

The Pokémon Company revealed the latest expansion for the mobile game Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket: Everyday Wonders. It’s centered on particularly cute critters, with some cozy full-art illustrations of fan-favorite Pokémon. The set is out next week on June 29 at 9 p.m. EDT.

The trailer for Pokémon TCG Pocket: Everyday Wonders gives us a preview of some of the new cards, including an adorable Pikachu and a similarly huggable Piplup. There's also a non-ex Sylveon, which from the competitive side of things, may see some play thanks to an ability that lets it heal 30 HP a turn from any of your Pokémon as long as it has a Tool attached.

There is also going to be Dedenne ex, with an attack that does 40 damage per Tool attached to all of your Pokémon: this could do a maximum of 160 damage, which is excellent for 2 energy, although it would be quite difficult to get out a full field of ‘mons and deck them all out with tools.

We saw the Puppy-Loving Girl trainer card, which lets you look at four cards on top of your deck and put any Pokémon with the Puppy Pile attack into your hand. The next four cards, Growlithe, Yamper, Fidough, and Rockruff, reveal that Puppy Pile is a move where you do 20 damage for each other card with Puppy Pile in your hand and in play. The move likely won’t be great competitively, but all of these good boys still deserve pats anyway (especially Fidough).

Small Balloon is a new Tool that lowers a basic Pokémon’s retreat cost by one, which actually seems quite good considering how many strong basic ‘mons there are in the game. There’s a new Snorlax with a mildly interesting ability that prevents opponents from using Stadium cards. Again, it’s probably not useful enough to see play, but who knows?

A potentially interesting card is Hisuian Zoroark ex. It has a three normal energy attack, Spiteful Illusion, that does 80 damage plus 20 for every Pokémon in your discard pile. Considering that stage 2 Pokémon being knocked out can put three Pokémon cards in your discard pile, if you had two stage 2s in your discard pile, this attack could do a whopping 200 damage. While that might sound unrealistic, if you were to pair it with something like Magnezone, which has been a meta staple for some time, it may be a somewhat reasonable strategy.

Finally, we've got Mega Diancle ex, a 170 hp basic that’s Brilliant Storm move does 40 damage plus 20 for every psychic energy attached to all of your Pokémon. This card seems to have a lot of potential with Mega Gardevoir ex and regular Gardevoir, which both produce a boatload of psychic energy. And that’s more or less everything of note that was shown, although there will be many more cards in the actual set.

Pokémon TCG Pocket was released on Oct. 30, 2024, and has basically printed money for The Pokémon Company since then, hitting 100 million downloads and generating over $500 million in revenue. Despite the massive windfall, quality-of-life updates have been slow, even as DeNA (the studio behind the game) has released new expansions at a consistent cadence. Thankfully, a May update improved the previously sluggish UI.

All in all, it doesn’t seem like DeNA is going to stop supporting the game any time soon. Last week, a Mega Rayquaza-themed expansion was announced for July. It will be the game’s 20th set.
