Despite being in early access since 2013, Project Zomboid remains the ultimate zombie survival RPG. The highly anticipated release of Project Zomboid Build 42 has arrived, and it makes substantial changes to gameplay and the very world you’re trying to survive in. Whether you’re braving it alone or playing with friends, there’s a lot to juggle and challenges to face along the way.
Set in a sandbox world, you must scavenge for items, craft, build, continuously fight zombies, and make choices that prevent your inevitable death by any means possible. Since the game is developed with a commitment to hardcore survival simulation, modding, and community feedback, the development of Project Zomboid only continues to become more advanced and ambitious.
In a press release, developers The Indie Stone say, “Build 42 represents one of the most substantial evolutions in Project Zomboid’s long history.” For good reason, too, as there are more stories waiting to be revealed, and ways to broaden your chances at survival. Even Knox Country has received a fresh lick of paint that’s a huge visual improvement to your surroundings.
There’s a lot of content and exploration opportunities for new and veteran Project Zomboid players alike. Without further ado, let’s jump into the key features you can expect to see when you play the game for the first time since the launch of Project Zomboid Build 42.
How Project Zomboid Build 42 Revamps the World
The update transforms Knox Country into a more detailed version of beloved locations, making them more varied and adding the feeling that they’re lived in. This is shown off in the Project Zomboid Build 42 showcase trailer, where areas that were once relatively desolate are now bustling with shrubbery, vehicles, stalls, and a whole host of decorations. When comparing Build 41 and the newly released Build 42, the surface area of the map has been doubled, with a total of 1,400 new buildings now ready and waiting to be encountered.
There will be a price increase for Project Zomboid across all regions and on all storefronts when Build 42 goes live, but it’s not expected to be significant.
Pairing this with improved lighting and the continuous development of a dark atmosphere, towns, forests, roads, and other surroundings now feel more dangerous than ever.

Not only does this refresh and expand exploration, but the environmental storytelling will bring greater lore that reveals more about the world in both the past and present of the apocalyptic events that went on to unfold. Just watch out for the collapsible fencing that the undead can now pour through.
Build 42 Expands Survival Efforts
Project Zomboid Build 42 also introduces deeper crafting, including new weapons to craft and building systems. This gives you more ways to create, maintain, and improve survival in the long-term that have the potential to change the course of your survival plan to something more ambitious. Alongside better crafting is the debut of animal husbandry, implementing new ways to farm, produce food, and take steps towards self-sufficiency.
A laundry list of quality-of-life improvements has landed alongside the update, as well as improvements across core systems such as inventory, interactions, UI, optimized controller support, and more.
This major Project Zomboid update and all the new content it brings with it are out now on PC, Mac, and Linux via Steam and GOG. Only time will tell how the community receives the update, but the future remains bright for Project Zomboid as it pushes the boundaries of what a survival RPG can become.
