Red Dead Redemption 2 is one of those rare titles that feels truly infinite, since, while the tragic tale of Arthur Morgan has a clear beginning, middle, and end, the community continually extends the game's lifespan.
This is only possible because Rockstar’s open world is so dense, hiding secrets that even years of data mining haven't fully exhausted!
For instance, one of the deepest layers of this immersion is the fact that every NPC follows a daily schedule. This means that if you decide to follow a random character, you’ll probably see them go to work, head to the saloon for a hand of poker, and eventually go home to sleep. And it even extends to the wildlife, most famously the loyal dog that visits its owner’s grave every single day.
However, there is one specific NPC that remains a haunting mystery. Now, almost a decade after launch, the mystery surrounding her has been reignited, and the latest theories are darker than ever.
The Tragedy of Lillian Powell
The spark came from a recent discussion on the Red Dead subreddit, where a player questioned the purpose of a well-dressed woman constantly complaining at the Bastille Saloon in Saint-Denis. This simple inquiry sparked a wave of nostalgia and quite dark theories about her true role in the game.
The character in question is Lillian Powell. She immediately stands out, since her sophisticated attire clashes with the grime of the bar, and her bitter complaints are hard to ignore. To see her story through, players must trigger four distinct conversations, but there's a catch: you have to wait three days between each interaction – a requirement the game never explicitly mentions, causing most players to miss her arc entirely.
At their first meeting, Lillian asks Arthur if he recognises her, implying she was once a prominent intellectual in Saint-Denis high society, before dismissing him for someone “more interesting.”
By their second interaction, the facade cracks, and she is desperately seeking a man named Jimmy to deliver her cocaine, revealing a severe addiction. In her final moments, she reveals her name and laments that she “used to be quite well known,” but has now become “just a bloody town drunk” with a life devoid of purpose.
A player questioned the purpose of a well-dressed woman constantly complaining at the Bastille Saloon in Saint Denis. This simple inquiry sparked a wave of nostalgia and quite dark theories about her true role in the game.
Things take a more interesting turn during the main campaign mission, “The Gilded Cage,” where Lillian can actually be found at the mayor’s party, completely drunk – and this is where the dark theories begin to swirl.
The most well-known theory is that the Lillian we meet is merely a ghost of her former self, a woman whose reputation was annihilated by addiction. She has become a shadow, bitter and regretful. Some players even claim that visiting her more frequently may trigger extra lines of dialogue in which she’s chewing cocaine gum, though this remains part of the game's urban legend.
But what truly disturbs most players is her disappearance. After triggering all her dialogues, Lillian simply vanishes without a trace. Given her nihilistic outlook, many believe she eventually took her own life, as she can no longer be found anywhere in the world. However, her existence is immortalized in a Cigarette Card, a collectable item usually reserved for characters with significant narrative weight.
“I feel like she probably had more to do that was cut, because you meet her, but it never goes anywhere,” one user noted. This suggests that Lillian Powell might have originally played a larger role in the Saint-Denis chapters, perhaps as a weird ally during the party mission or even something more.
However, as is tradition, Rockstar Games remains silent on these theories and speculations. So, whether she is a victim of cut content or a deliberate, tragic commentary on the era’s citizens, Lillian Powell remains one of the most haunting mysteries in Red Dead Redemption 2.
