Capcom announced a Resident Evil Veronica remake during Summer Game Fest 2026, and it's looking like a pretty big deal. It's also just Resident Evil: Veronica, as Capcom dropped the "code" from the original title. There's no release date yet for Resident Evil Veronica, but Capcom plans to launch it sometime in 2027.

The trailer shows Claire Redfield entering a run-down Paris apartment — in first-person, a la Grace Ashcroft from Resident Evil Requiem. A nice old lady has been looking after Claire's brother (and even makes a boulder joke), but when she disappears, someone else steps in and kidnaps Claire.

The original Code Veronica launched in 2000 on Sega Dreamcast, though Capcom released it as Code Veronica X in 2001 on PlayStation 2 with new cinematics and again in 2011 as a high-resolution remaster for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Both re-releases featured the "tank" controls of the original games and didn't include any gameplay changes, though.

Code Veronica occupies an unusual place in Resident Evil storytelling. It's an essential bridge between the events of Resident Evil and sets up the conflict between Chris Redfield and Albert Wesker that shapes Resident Evil 5 and (less directly) Resident Evil 6. Yet until now, it's only been available via backward compatibility on Xbox and PlayStation.

Resident Evil leakers teased a Code Veronica remake for months before Resident Evil Requiem's launch, though the project still comes as something of a surprise. Capcom has a habit of hiding teases for future projects like it did with a nod to Resident Evil 3 remake in Resident Evil 2 remake. Requiem's S.T.A.R.S puzzle includes a reference to Rebecca Chambers, the protagonist of Resident Evil 0 — another game that's only gotten an HD remaster treatment, but no proper remake. In terms of Resident Evil lore, it is rather less important, though, so perhaps Capcom's just setting the stage for future remakes and plot developments after Requiem's ending drew the existing saga to a close.
