Resident Evil Requiem's worst-kept secret is out: Leon S. Kennedy will return to the survival horror franchise in next year's sequel, Capcom has confirmed in a new trailer revealed at The Game Awards. The former Raccoon City police officer and special agent will join Requiem protagonist Grace Ashcroft as a playable character.

A new trailer that debuted at The Game Awards showed Grace encountering Requiem weirdo Victor Gideon, a police investigation, and the arrival of Leon as quiet action hero — then plenty of gore, including Leon facing groups of zombie-like characters, including chainsawing at least one of them in half. According to TGAs host Geoff Keighley, Requiem will feature both Grace and Leon as playable characters, with a mix of survival horror and action elements.

Leon hasn't been featured as a playable protagonist in a new mainline Resident Evil game since 2012's Resident Evil 6, where he shared starring duties with Chris Redfield, Ada Wong, and Jake Muller. But he starred in last year's Resident Evil 4 remake, and remains a fan-favorite character. His inclusion in Requiem makes perfect narrative sense; FBI technical analyst Grace Ashcroft will explore the ruins of Raccoon City — including the police department where Leon once worked — as she investigates a series of strange deaths at the Wrenwood Hotel, where her mother Alyssa died.

Given its place in the Resident Evil timeline, Leon should be in his mid to late 40s during the events of Requiem. The game's creators had previously discussed the challenges of making a modern horror game starring a character like Leon, who is presented as an unflinching superhero special agent in his later games.

"We always thought about making Leon the protagonist," Requiem director Koshi Nakanishi said in June. "Making a horror game based around him is difficult. He wouldn’t jump at something like a bucket falling. No one wants to see Leon scared by every little thing. So he’s actually quite a bad match for horror."

Resident Evil Requiem will be released on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X on Feb. 27, 2026.
