The next entry in the Plague Tale series is right around the corner. Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, a prequel set 15 years before the start of A Plague Tale: Requiem, is coming out on August 27 for PlayStation 5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.

It stars the pirate smuggler Sophia (who also appears in the second game in the series), as she attempts to unravel a curse on Minotaur Island. Sophia will explore mysterious ancient ruins that cause her to shift back and forth between the distant past of Minoan civilization and the present. For those not familiar with the intricacies of Bronze Age history, Minoan civilization was centered around the Greek island of Crete in the Mediterranean Sea.

The most obvious difference between Resonance and previous games in the franchise is that this one seems far more focused on action than stealth: Sophia has a sword, and she isn’t afraid of using it. The latest trailer shows her hacking and slashing as she battles rival raiders and gladiators alike.

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy will be the third entry in the Plague Tale series, which, as the name would suggest, are games focused around the spread of the black plague. The original 2019 game is set in 14th-century France, following Amica de Rune while she avoids hordes of diseased rats and soldiers. Its 2022 sequel, Requiem, once again follows Amica and her brother.

The series has generally been met with praise and solid sales, with the first game selling over 1 million copies, while the second hit over 3 million. It’s developed by Asobo Studio and published by Focus Entertainment, which will once again team up on the latest installment. It will be interesting to see if Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy can once again find success even with its all-new gameplay focus and setting.
