Master the ragdoll physics movement of a drunken knight You play as ragdoll-knights with different weapons and armor sets out of the 15th century. Learn to control the physical character and his weird behavior. (Jump and run, dodge, climb, fight) The combat is dynamic, it depends on the weapon choice, the weight of the characters, and your armor.

The goal is to get through the individual levels alive. You can heal by drinking wine, which grants a temporary malus on the character´s stability. Ritter & Rotwein has its fun moments, but it’s often incredibly infuriating trying to control your character, even when sober. Platforming is constant and frequently a struggle, no matter how much you try. Trying to climb over ledges of any kind tends to result in frustration. Your character cannot even function properly while ragdolled, which means you can often die from being stunlocked by the environment or by enemies that just keep wailing on you.

There are also glitchy hand positions on surfaces and annoying bonus tasks that make you spend most of your time just getting back to where you left off, with little to no benefit beyond extra points that are better earned by simply finishing the level instead. As much as the art style, the story, and the ability to alter your character to fit a certain build are appealing, they’re also held back by the fact that so much of Ritter & Rotwein is a platformer, which often kills any casual enjoyment.

Some people complain about the occasional instant death, but that isn’t really the problem, especially when it’s caused by weapons in Ritter & Rotwein. The biggest issue with damage is that ragdolled characters are completely unable to shift even slightly out of the way, leaving them helpless as they’re repeatedly hit to death.
