There are many things to love about Finland, and soon enough, you will add 'making the best survival game of the year' to that list.
If you think this sounds overly enthusiastic, then you probably didn't get to play the demo for Road to Vostok, an ambitious endeavor by solo developer and former Finnish Army Lieutenant, Antti Leinonen.
The development of Road to Vostok became public in 2023, and from the get-go, it looked like one of the most promising survival sandbox games in the market.

Three years later, through multiple demos and a full port from Unity to Godot, Road to Vostok finally has an official early access release date, complete with a pricing model.
When is Road to Vostok Coming Out
As revealed in the early access trailer uploaded to the game's YouTube channel today, Road to Vostok is coming out on Steam on April 7th, 2026.
The early access model is set to have most of the game's core features, including multiple maps, dynamic events, traders, and the elusive shelter cat (to the envy of Escape From Tarkov users).
Per both the video and the game's social media page, Road to Vostok will retail at €14.99 at launch, with a full price of €19.99. The developer has not shared details on regional pricing yet. Most games set at €19.99 in the Eurozone tend to go for $19.99 in the United States.
You can catch the full early access trailer, showcasing some of the Road to Vostok's key features, here:
Most survival games have you brave the elements and the odd enemy, but nothing hits as hard as having a Mi-24 fire rockets at you.
A Dark Sandbox
The main inspiration for Road to Vostok is the border area between Finland and Russia. Nothing says home like a huge, sparsely populated zone marked by extreme winters and trees as far as the eye can see.
Developer Antti then spiced things up by adding a crisis element to it, which attracted all sorts of bandits and hostile military units to the area.
As a fully-fledged sandbox, Road to Vostok will not have a clear win condition, but the opportunities to start over will be plentiful. The freedom of customization of both your shelter and equipment brings a tear to the eye, but it is the permadeath mechanics that make the whole affair so tense.
Road to Vostok will not have a clear win condition, but the opportunities to start over will be plentiful.
Road to Vostok will have a special area for high-stakes raids where you have everything to gain, but also everything to lose. Dying there to a marauder or soldier means the end of the line for your character. Your shelter, your equipment, even your little darling cat, all gone in the blink of an eye.
If you prefer a more relaxed approach to survival, you can just sit around fishing, playing guitar by the campfire, and occasionally shooting bandits that don't take the hint.
Road to Vostok is best described as a single-player cross between STALKER, Escape From Tarkov, and DayZ, and I cannot wait to give it a go once it's out. Road to Vostok comes out on April 7th, 2026, for PC via Steam.
