Romeo is a Dead Man is the latest title from Grasshopper Manufacture and the delightfully surreal mind of Goichi Suda, aka Suda51. In addition to its focused, single-player adventure, Romeo is a Dead Man also includes some fun and unique little side hustles that you can take part in.
One of them is the planting of Bastards. While it may sound rather rude, they actually serve a rather fun purpose and can help make your trek through Suda's latest adventure a bit easier to undertake.
RELATED
Planting Bastards will grant you new abilities and skills, while also allowing you to vary up your play style in a fun way. If you're finding yourself a bit lost in the structure of this whole thing, our dandy little guide has got you covered. In this guide, I'll walk you through finding Bastards, as well as how to plant and grow them.
What are Bastards?
Bastards are essentially Romeo is a Dead Man's version of special attacks, acting as entities that you can conjure up to do battle with you. They come in a variety of different styles, and in a game that's all about combat for the most part, having unique ways to attack and do damage is appreciated.
Once you've acquired or grown a Bastard, equipping them is pretty simple. You can assign them to a particular button, then unleash them in battle. The game has a ton of different ones to find and build up.
How to Find Bastard Seeds
There are a few ways to find Bastard Seeds, with one of the easiest being random drops from enemies. If you're lucky, you can actually get some pretty decent ones as drops. Bastards can also appear in treasure points, which are located throughout each level.
Finally, you can also buy them from Shiroyabu on the ship, which acts as the game's sort of hub world between chapters. No matter which way you acquire them, getting new Bastard Seeds is going to be important for you if you want to make the most out of Romeo is a Dead Man's fast-paced combat.

Planting and Growing Bastards
Once you have a Bastard Seed, visit Luna on the ship. You'll be able to plant quite a bit right from the outset, and have access to quite a few plant beds immediately.
Once you've planted a seed, you have a few ways you can proceed. You can either wait for it to grow, or if you're feeling a bit impatient, you can pay money to have it sprout immediately.
After you've grown a Bastard, it's worth remembering that this is a Suda51 game, after all. You won't just press a button and get it, you'll have to physically pull it from the ground. From here, you can equip it into whatever slot you'd like in the menu.
There's also a way to make things even more interesting with the Fusion menu. Here is where you can splice two Bastards into one. This can lead to some incredibly enjoyable combinations. It's important to note that fusing Bastards will lead to both of them being lost, so make sure you're ready to part with them when the time comes.
