Japan has long been home to countless innovators in the gaming industry, with world-famous brands, publishers, and developers such as PlayStation, Nintendo, and Capcom having originated from the East Asian country.

Now, the legendary live-action and anime media company Toei, famous for producing the long-running Kamen Rider, Super Sentai, Power Rangers, Dragon Ball, and One Piece series, will finally begin to dive into video game development itself through the new game business brand Toei Games.

While this news may sound exciting for longtime anime and tokusatsu fans, it does come with a bit of a disappointing catch for those hoping to get new Toei game releases based on their storied IPs.

The Launch and Goal of Toei Games

According to Toei's President and CEO, Fumio Yoshimura, the decision to create Toei Games is a part of the company's medium to long-term project called "Toei New Wave 2033" with the goal of delivering more stories to the entire world.

Yoshimura went on to clarify that, "We believe that our challenge in the game business, with the global market as our main battleground, is the embodiment of that vision."

Toei Games will function as a "new pillar" of Toei's celebrated multimedia output, right alongside Toei Animation and its film and live-action show departments.

We believe that our challenge in the game business, with the global market as our main battleground, is the embodiment of that vision.

However, Yoshimura did note that Toiei Games will not develop video games based on Kamen Rider, Super Sentai, Dragon Ball, or any of its other franchises and will instead create brand-new gaming IPs that will leverage Toei's technology and video production expertise.

Toei Games will specifically aim to develop and launch games on PC via Steam first, but there are plans to release titles on home consoles such as Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox in the future.

The first game to be created by Toei Games will be officially announced on Friday, April 24th, but the company already has a lineup of titles in the works with developers recruited from Japan and across the globe to work on them.

While the news that Toei Games will not produce titles based on their established, highly popular franchises may be disappointing to many fans, its new games will likely still feature the same comedic charm and epic appeal as its tokusatsu and anime productions.

Additionally, if Toei Games' first few titles end up doing well in the global market, they could one day release games based on their existing franchises in order to garner new fans from across the globe, such as a game based on a new Kamen Rider show, one inspired by the gaming-focused Kamen Rider Ex-Aid, or one based on any of the dozens of Super Sentai teams.
