His coverage often focuses on franchises such as Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Trails, Tales of, and Star Ocean.
One of the most enjoyable parts of attending a gaming convention is meeting and talking to countless indie developers. At Gamescom Latam 2026, a team that caught my eye for both their game and their sheer charm was Acrobatic Chirimenjako, helmed by director and artist Achabox, along with scenario writers and programmers Seishi and Ame. Together, they have created the soulful Schrödinger's Call, a visual novel that allows players to experience the pain and salvation of human connection.
In Schrödinger's Call, we play as Mary, who engages in repeated telephone conversations with a single soul in each episode. Her role (and the player's) is to guide them toward accepting death. I've played the demo, and it truly is a gut-wrenching yet heartfelt experience, conveyed in every word. I could feel the interlocutor's anxiety, but also the relief as they spoke with me.

If you're looking to get into the genre, any of these are a good jumping-off point.
"While your choices won't change the overall route, they will slightly alter the conversations that follow," Seishi told me. I wondered about this because visual novels often offer branching paths and different endings based on your choices. He followed up by saying, "We decided that a single, definitive ending was the only way to truly explore the game's core theme: saving others through dialogue." It made perfect sense, and I can certainly get behind non-branching storytelling, and well, that's just part of being a JRPG fan.
Introducing the Neo-Visual Novel Genre
For the uninitiated, Schrödinger's Call is inspired by the famous thought experiment, Schrödinger's Cat. To sum it up, the experiment posits that a cat is both alive and dead inside a box until someone looks inside. "Originally, when a phone rang, you had no way of knowing who was on the other end until you picked up the receiver and heard their voice. I was struck by the idea that perhaps the person on the line isn't actually 'determined' while the phone is ringing; rather, they only become 'real' the moment you answer." According to Seishi, the act of dialogue is akin to observing and defining existence, which is why the title Schrödinger's Call felt so fitting.

A 4th-wall-breaking game that is perfect for fans who love mystery
One of the hallmarks of a visual novel, as the name implies, is both the script and the visual presentation, and in that regard, Schrödinger's Call delivers in spades. The art was created by director Achabox, and the intended visual style was a fusion of traditional European picture-book illustrations and Japanese anime aesthetics.
I was struck by the idea that perhaps the person on the line isn't actually 'determined' while the phone is ringing; rather, they only become 'real' the moment you answer.
Seishi tells me they also have an agreement with Envato to use their graphic design assets, as well as the Brushstroke application to transform still images and video into oil painting-style art. I'd say it worked like a charm, as the visuals are mesmerizing, lending a melancholic vibe that fits the game's theme perfectly.
All in all, Schrödinger's Call is shaping up to be an amazing Neo-Visual Novel, as the developers call it, which is a unique take on the genre that offers an immersive narrative experience where text, visuals, and music are seamlessly integrated. If you're not convinced, don't just take my word for it: Schrödinger's Call is being published by Shueisha Games, one of Japan's biggest publishers, after being the grand winner of the Game Creators CAMP back in 2021. Shueisha probably knows a thing or two about publishing since, after all, they handle a few minor works like Dragon Ball and One Piece. Schrödinger's Call is set to launch on Steam and Switch on 27 May.
