After Ninja Theory caught everyone off guard during the Xbox Games Showcase on June 7 by announcing that Senua, a brand-new entry to the Hellblade franchise, is officially on the way, the studio seems just as excited as the fans themselves.

Game Sequels Nobody Asked For that Ended Up Being Incredible Related

That’s because, since the reveal, the developers have taken to social media to drop more information and curiosities about what we can expect from this ambitious project, and the latest updates address some of the community’s biggest concerns.

A More Expansive Journey for the Celtic Warrior

Senua Story Length Will Be Quite a Bit Longer Than Hellblade 1 and 2 2

In response to fan questions on X (formerly Twitter), the developers finally revealed how long the game is expected to be. It seems that Senua is shaping up to be exactly what many of us hoped Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II would be in terms of scale, since the studio just confirmed that the upcoming title will be “quite a bit longer” than any previous Hellblade entry.

For the sake of comparison, both the original title and its sequel clock in at approximately eight hours of gameplay, according to data from HowLongToBeat. At the time of the second game’s launch back in 2024, many players expressed disappointment with the short duration, especially given the years of anticipation. However, Ninja Theory seems to have taken that feedback to heart for this new installment.

“Senua is still in development, so we don't have an exact figure yet, but we're designing it to be quite a bit longer than previous Hellblade games,” the studio’s official post reads. “We're creating a more expansive, fully realized action-adventure journey, while still keeping the experience focused, carefully crafted, and deliberately paced around Senua's personal story.” This suggests that while the game is growing in size, it won't lose the cinematic intimacy that defined the franchise’s identity.

In another recent post, Ninja Theory shared other great news for those who haven't played the previous titles but are interested in diving into Senua: you won't actually need to have played the first two games to understand the narrative or enjoy the gameplay of the new project! The team confirmed that Senua will be a “standalone story” and has been designed from the start as a “strong entry point for new players.”

They only said that those who are already familiar with the previous lore will certainly recognize the returning characters, the dark tone, the recurring themes of psychosis, and the Norse mythology vibe, but the studio insists that this knowledge won’t negatively affect the overall experience for a newcomer, which is great for players who just want to jump right into the third title of the franchise.

Vale lembrar que Senua is set in the same haunting universe as Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice and Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, and follows the Celtic warrior trapped in (another) purgatory between life and death. In this dark limbo, she must fight through nightmarish manifestations to reach the afterlife and reunite with those she loves (again).

By moving away from a direct numerical sequel title and focusing on a standalone experience, Ninja Theory is clearly trying to broaden the reach of the franchise while utilizing the power of Unreal Engine 5 to deliver a more robust action-adventure loop. I’m definitely excited for what’s to come, especially since it seems that the studio is going back to its roots for this one!

Either way, we will only have to wait just another year, as Senua is currently scheduled to arrive sometime in 2027, with confirmed versions only for PC and Xbox Series X|S so far. With a longer campaign and a more accessible narrative, this could very well be the definitive version of Senua’s journey that fans have been waiting for.
