A mystery is unraveling across two timelines

Apple TV’s twisty dystopian mystery Silo returns for a third season on July 3, and a new trailer released on Tuesday reveals it’s going to feel a lot like another hit post-apocalyptic television series. The past two seasons of Silo were set in a future where 10,000 people live in a massive underground structure and will quickly die if they venture outside. This season, the narrative follows the structure of Prime Video’s Fallout as it alternates between timelines to answer questions about how the world ended and who is really in control.
Silo season 2 ended with a first glimpse at a near future where fears of nuclear war are running high after Iran supposedly detonated a dirty bomb on U.S. soil. This season will spend more time in flashbacks focused on a conspiracy tied to the creation of the Silos and the rules used to control their populations. The trailer shows a crowd including journalist Helen Drew (Jessica Henwick) visiting the Silo network at a time when the area around the Silos was still green rather than a corpse-strewn wasteland.
Just as conditions in Fallout’s Vault 33 have deteriorated over the course of that show’s two seasons, things in Silo 18 seem even more dire following the return of Juliette Nichols (Rebecca Ferguson). The Silo is running out of time, and it’s still not safe to go outside. Juliette has amnesia, supposedly caused by being deprived of oxygen while she was in the incinerator. However, it’s pretty clear that she’s being given pills to impair her memory at the urging of the ominous AI voice that spoke to Camille Sims (Alexandria Riley) at the end of season 2. The goal is obviously to keep Juliette from sharing what she learned about the Silo network with others, but Sims’ attempts at control just seem to be causing more chaos.
Silo is a far more serious show than Fallout, but if you’re looking for a paranoid tale about people preparing for the nuclear apocalypse and those stuck living through the aftermath, you should definitely check it out. Fallout likely won’t be back until 2027.
